Tucker: The Man and His Dream (1988)

Though filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola is generally not remembered for anything he made after the 1970s, his Tucker: The Man and His Dream (1988) -- co-produced by pal George Lucas -- is one of the best movies about the flip-side of the American Dream. Though it's constructed with more fairy-tale than fact, its bright, shiny, peppy attitude is enough overcome the movie's not-quite resounding, but necessary, conclusion. read more...

The Big Red One (1980)

In 1980, after thirty years directing movies, Samuel Fuller got to make what he hoped would be his masterpiece, based on his experiences in World War II with his unit, the "big red 1." Fuller's version was a nearly four-hour epic. Surely it would have been the culmination of all his work, and been his masterpiece -- the film he would be remembered by. It's not his masterpiece, but only because the studio chopped it down to 2 hours, added narration, and a new score that Fuller did not approve of. As it stands now, The Big Red One is one of many masterpieces, among his many cheaper B-movies that are just as good, The Steel Helmet, Pickup on South Street, Shock Corridor, and The Naked Kiss. read more...

    Kagemusha (1980)

Even though he had recently won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film (for Dersu Uzala), and even though he was widely recognized as one of the most famous and celebrated filmmakers in the world, by 1980, Akira Kurosawa couldn't get a film made. Thankfully two of his fans, George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola, came to his rescue and helped secure funding for what became Kagemusha (1980), one of the director's most beautiful epics, and one of his best films in color. Set in the 16th century, it concerns the feudal lord Shingen (Tatsuya Nakadai), who is fatally wounded by a sniper. read more...

    1917 (2019)

Inspired by stories told to him by his grandfather, director Sam Mendes creates this truly impressive war movie, one that ranks with the genre's very best. With cinematography by Roger Deakins (who also worked with Mendes on the excellent Skyfall, as well as other films), 1917 is crafted to look and feel like one, long unbroken shot, although there are secret edits throughout. George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman as a pair of Lance Corporals in the first World War, sent on a dangerous mission across the French countryside to warn another battalion of a deadly ambush. They cross through enemy trenches, past overturned tanks, through cherry orchards, muddy roads, collapsed bridges, etc. A plane crashes near where they're standing, and, rising and falling flares cast the most amazing play of light on ruined buildings. Without visible cuts 1917 has an entirely different feel from an ordinary movie (and even different from Birdman, which did not cover nearly the same amount of territory); there's no cheating time, and there is a sense of the inevitable as we and the characters move inexorably forward. The movie is powerful, suspenseful, moving, shocking, exciting, and even funny, and yet it still manages to deliver an impactful "futility of war" message. It's one of the year's best. Colin Firth, Andrew Scott, Mark Strong, and Benedict Cumberbatch appear in small parts as officers. read more...
