The Mask of Fu Manchu (1932)

In the mid-1990s, four old MGM horror films appeared together in a laserdisc box set: Charles Brabin's The Mask of Fu Manchu (1932), Karl Freund's Mad Love (1935), Tod Browning's Mark of the Vampire (1935) and Browning's The Devil-Doll (1936). Since MGM was never really interested in horror, the films all have histories of troubled productions. But nonetheless, they survive as genuinely wonderful classics. read more...

The Visit (2015)

After several perplexing misfires, writer/director M. Night Shyamalan has scaled back, gone for a lower budget and a lighter tone, and has emerged with his most effective movie in over a decade. The Visit begins interestingly; the potentially creepy moments are easily explained away, and even laughed off, but the director still manages to create a subtle, creeping dread that steadily builds toward the climax. read more...

The Devil Bat (1940)

After Dracula (1931), Bela Lugosi became a huge star, instantly recognizable (to this day) throughout the world. However, due to various factors, he ended up, more often than not, making movies for low-budget poverty row studios. The Devil Bat was one of the cheaper ones, but also perhaps one of the most ludicrously entertaining. It can be characterized as a black comedy, detailing the ridiculous attempts of the main character to murder his victims, and the equally ridiculous way he's captured. read more...

The People Under the Stairs (1991)

Wes Craven's The People Under the Stairs strikes me as a remarkably forward-thinking movie for its time, with Black heroes and white villains, even though Ving Rhames is still stuck in the role of a thief. Young Brandon Quintin Adams stars as "Fool," named after the Tarot card. He lives with his ailing mother and his older sister (Kelly Jo Minter). He learns from his sister's boyfriend Leroy (Rhames), that they are to be evicted unless they can come up with triple the rent in one day. Fortunately, Leroy has a plan. read more...

The Boy (2016)

While it's a not-terribly-original entry in the "creepy doll" horror subgenre, this fright flick nonetheless relies on interesting characters, a good cast, expert pacing, and a spooky atmosphere. Resorting to annoying jump-scares only a couple of times, director William Brent Bell (of the decidedly inferior The Devil Inside) takes his time exploring the scary old house, using animal heads, off-kilter angles, and sound, to give The Boy a sense of dread. read more...
