    Jersey Boys (2014)

Everyone knows that Clint Eastwood is a music fan. His directorial debut Play Misty for Me included a scene at the Monterey Jazz Festival, he directed the great biopic of Charlie Parker, Bird (1988), and produced the documentary Thelonious Monk: Straight No Chaser. But as far as I can tell, he has never really shown an interest in 1960s pop music, and he has never used any music by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons in any of his movies. So what drew him to making the film version of the big Broadway hit Jersey Boys remains a mystery. The finished film exhibits no real hints of personal passion. read more...

    Pride (2014)

Lately, it seems that every couple of months we get a new movie in The Full Monty mode: a sweet U.K. comedy-drama about plucky working-class folks who do something terribly out of the ordinary to save the community; in the process, several of the stuffier characters usually learn to lighten up and love life. Directed by Matthew Warchus (whose only other film is the forgotten, 15 year-old Simpatico), Pride is probably one of the better examples, leaning less toward cuteness a bit more toward earnestness. read more...

      Just Mercy (2019)

It follows a pretty traditional arc, but this prison/courtroom drama is nevertheless effectively tense and moving, due to the movie's picture of simmering racial injustice and the fine performances. read more...

        The Sting (1973)

Paul Newman and Robert Redford re-teamed after their successful Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) for George Roy Hill's The Sting, a Depression-era tale of con men. Redford gets the lion's share of screen time as a small-time grifter who wants revenge for the death of his mentor and partner. With the help of Newman, he sets up a complex horseracing scheme to rope and capture a shady hood (Robert Shaw). read more...

        What's Cooking? (2000)

This one could be classified as a so-called "chick flick," but What's Cooking? (2000) is so nicely balanced and fine-tuned by director Gurinder Chadha (Bend It Like Beckham) that it turns into an honest holiday film, filled with plenty of delicious-looking shots of Thanksgiving dishes being prepared and served. It focuses on four families: one Jewish, one Vietnamese, one African-American, and one Latino, as they go about their holidays, filled with personal dramas. A son lies to his family to spend the holiday with his girlfriend, a lesbian couple tries to cope with conservative parents, a pushy mother-in-law gets in the way, an ex-husband is accidentally invited to dinner, and a gun is found in a teen's backpack. The stories are universal and could apply to anyone of any background, and indeed, the 17 year-old movie is surprisingly timeless (a political discussion in one scene could easily apply to last year's election). Chadha co-wrote the screenplay with her husband Paul Mayeda Berges. The all-star cast includes Joan Chen, Julianna Margulies, Kyra Sedgwick, Mercedes Ruehl, Lainie Kazan, Alfre Woodard, and Dennis Haysbert. read more...
