The Hot Spot (1990)

Dennis Hopper directed this vivid neo-noir that doesn't always work, and is far too long, but gets by on style. Don Johnson plays a drifter, Harry Madox, who rolls into a hot Texas town and lands a job selling cars. He attracts the attention of a pretty accountant, Gloria Harper (Jennifer Connelly), and the boss's wife Dolly Harshaw (Virginia Madsen). Meanwhile, he has a spiffy plan to rob the local bank (all the employees are volunteer firemen). Dolly seduces him, and then has him over a barrel when she's the only one who can give him an alibi. Even in 2021, Johnson looks impossibly cool in his late-80s ripply, loose suits, Connelly is as beautiful at that time as any woman in the history of the world, and Madsen is a perfect femme fatale, sensuous and wicked. Hopper directs with a strong sense of the sweltering heat, and a sure touch for the genre, as well as a sense of cruelty. The memorable music score by Jack Nitzsche features performances by Miles Davis, John Lee Hooker, and others. Kino Lorber released The Hot Spot on a gorgeous new Blu-ray, complete with a commentary track by author Bryan Reesman, interviews with Madsen and co-star William Sadler, and trailers. read more...

London Fields (2018)

Based on a novel by Martin Amis, this shabby, wildly uneven neo-noir is a total mess, coasting on the surface of several cartoonish characters as they interact without rhyme or reason — or purpose. read more...

    Mary Queen of Scots (2018)

Just about everything that's usually wrong with costume movies is on display in this dull, chunky ornamental iceberg. It begins with some printed text that's supposed to provide a backdrop, but it goes by pretty quickly, and -- as someone who is not already an expert on Mary, Queen of Scots -- I spent half the movie trying to catch up, and simultaneously trying to keep from falling asleep. Mary Queen of Scots ostensibly tells about the conflict and connection between Mary (Saoirse Ronan) and Elizabeth (Margot Robbie). Mary is the rightful ruler of England, but also a Catholic and therefore unacceptable; she returns to Scotland to rule there, and attempts a kind of truce with Elizabeth, the current ruler of England. The men who counsel both women strong-arm their own opinions into things, and the women are constantly thwarted. There's a race to marry and produce an heir, and a stalemate over who gets to be the next in line for the throne. Screenwriter Beau Willimon and director Josie Rourke present the story in unwieldy chunks, with time marching forward in unknown blocks, although they occasionally identify places that I'd never heard of, with no context. Most of the scenes seem to be attempts to present characters talking to each other in front interesting backgrounds. Sometimes characters talk while riding horses, and you might wonder where they're headed. Nowhere, it seems. read more...

      Amour (2012)

Acclaimed German-born director Michael Haneke makes films like a kid with a magnifying glass, tormenting ants. On the one hand, he's not safe, but on the other, he has a kind of disdain toward his viewers. His films are like a challenge to see how strong a viewer's constitution is.  read more...

      Fool for Love (1985)

Robert Altman passed most of the 1980s adapting plays to the screen, and didn't exactly make waves with his efforts. Made for Cannon Films and based on a work by Sam Shepard, Fool for Love isn't one of his best from this period, but it's far from the worst. A run-down Kim Basinger stars as May, who lives in a dusty roadside motel. Cowboy Eddie (Shepard) shows up with rifles, horses, and a bottle of booze. He has some kind of longstanding relationship with May, and he has come to make trouble. May is trying to hide from him. In a marvel of bad timing, she has a date that night, with Martin (Randy Quaid), who must contend with the charming, volatile Eddie. Meanwhile, an old man (Harry Dean Stanton) lingers in the edges of the story, sometimes commenting on what's going on; he also has a mysterious relationship with the characters. It's a little on the cool side, but Altman's loose, observant direction allows for some depth of character, as well as an off-kilter tension, achieved through his brilliant use of framing and desert-flower colors. This movie proves that, even with tough, unyielding material, he was a master. Kino Lorber released it on Blu-ray in 2021. Bonuses include a featurette, and trailers. read more...
