Come and See (1985)

In a perfect world, Come and See, opening June 29, 2001, at the Roxie for a week's run, would put an end to all World War II movies. Indeed, though I was a huge movie buff as far back as 1985 and kept track of the comings and goings of new movies, I'd never heard of Come and See until now. If it had received a wider release, it certainly would have diminished the impact of something like Platoon, and today, it makes Pearl Harbor look absolutely useless. read more...

Ashes and Diamonds (1958)

This great film by Andrzej Wajda is considered the greatest Polish film ever made, and I'm sure that's not too far off the mark. Taking place just after the liberation of Poland at the end of WWII, several private factions still feel the need to fight. But the young James Dean-like Zbigniew Cybulski wonders why, especially after he meets and falls in love with a beautiful barmaid. The story takes place over the course of one day and depicts the failed assassination attempt of a new Communist district leader and the subsequent second try. The achingly charismatic Cybulski virtually makes this film work all by himself; after the film's release, legions of young Polish men rushed out to buy copies of his trademark dark glasses. But Wajda's severe, deep-focused, black-and-white cinematography also helps tell the powerful story. read more...

Barbara (2013)

Christian Petzold's Barbara manages to depict horror and heroism in the East Germany of the early 1980s, without resorting to hysterics or preaching. This is a remarkably subtle movie, spending most of its energy zeroing in on the clenched face of its heroine, looking for cracks. read more...

    La cérémonie (1995)

That old French New Wave master Claude Chabrol never really found the admiration he deserved, perhaps because he worked regularly and steadily, largely in the suspense genre, and routinely turned in superior work. He never really smacked anyone upside the head with any specific masterpiece, but since his passing in 2010, many among his fifty-plus films have emerged as greats. One of them is La Cérémonie (1995), based on a novel by Ruth Rendell, due to its subtle and creepy mise-en-scene. read more...

    Gallipoli (1981)

Australian director Peter Weir has made a career of masculine films about characters at odds with their environments, and Gallipoli (1981) is one of the finest examples of his vision. Archy (Mark Lee) is a promising sprinter, capable of breaking records. Upright and dedicated, he meets another sprinter, the roguish Frank (Mel Gibson), and they become fast friends. But when the first World War approaches, Archy feels the call of duty. Weir's excellent outdoor cinematography at first emphasizes freedom, speed, and friendship, before slowly changing direction. Early in the film, the friends survive a walk across the baking desert near Perth, using knowledge of their own land. But at the ill-fated Battle of Gallipoli in Turkey, the landscape is uncertain, constricting, and deadly. Gibson's star power was already evident, and he and Weir teamed up again the following year for The Year of Living Dangerously. read more...
