Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool (2017)

Though they don't look much alike, Annette Bening plays a fifty-something Gloria Grahame by speaking in a higher register, the breathier, sexier voice that made her a star in The Grifters. (That's a role that Grahame could easily have played at some point.) Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool is based on the true final chapter of Grahame's story; she was amazing in films like It's a Wonderful Life, In a Lonely Place, The Bad and the Beautiful, and The Big Heat, sensual and dangerous and wise, but then the good roles simply dried up. In the late 1970s, she went to Liverpool to perform on stage and met and fell in love with the much younger Peter Turner; Turner wrote a book about their time together, which is the basis for this film. Jamie Bell plays Peter, and, miraculously, the two create a tender chemistry onscreen. The movie isn't too concerned with age differences or hitting biographical highlights. Rather, it tries to get at the heart of how these two connected. It's lovely, and unexpectedly romantic. It's also touching how Peter's family, especially his mum (Julie Walters), befriend and care about Gloria as a person. It was directed by Paul McGuigan, who mostly specializes in crime films and TV shows; this is his gentlest work. read more...

Breaking the Waves (1996)

I'm not an expert on Lars von Trier's Breaking the Waves. That honor belongs to my friend, and a great ex-film critic, Rob Blackwelder, who saw the film some dozen times and considers it to be the greatest film he's ever seen. (You can read Rob's original review here.) I've only seen it once, and I don't think I ever need to see it again, but I would concur that it is indeed an outstanding film. It's one of von Trier's best and purest expressions of his disturbed psyche. It's cruel, but also humane; it's depressing, but also spiritually uplifting. read more...

Once (2007)

This lovely, small-scale musical made big waves for the way it combined open-hearted music and a realistic setting. A vacuum repairman (Glen Hansard) and street musician meets a lovely immigrant (Marketa Irglova) and discover they have a musical rapport. The reality of Dublin keeps their story grounded, however; no one breaks into song for no reason, and things do not necessarily work out for the best. It cost a little over $200,000 in U.S. dollars, and ended up grossing more than $9 million. The heartbreaking tune "Falling Slowly" won an Oscar. read more...

The Burning Plain (2009)

Back in 2006, many film writers became excited about a certain movement, a kind of Mexican New Wave. Three major movies released toward the end of the year, Guillermo Del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth, Alfonso Cuarón's Children of Men and Alejandro González Iñárritu's Babel, spearheaded this excitement. There were several other, smaller films in the movement as well, including Carlos Reygadas' Battle in Heaven and Fernando Eimbcke's Duck Season, which most writers seem to have missed, but that's another story. A slightly bigger story was the feud that cropped up between director Iñárritu and screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga over the three films they made together (Amores perros, 21 Grams and Babel). read more...
