Seberg (2019)

Once it becomes clear that this biopic is really only half about Jean Seberg, then it starts to work in its own fascinating, tragic way, driven by Kristen Stewart's fierce, fervent lead performance. read more...

The Sweet Hereafter (1997)

After a school bus spins off an icy road and into a frozen lake, killing the children aboard, a lawyer (Ian Holm) turns up and tries to initiate a lawsuit. Egoyan directs this wintry tale with surprising, masterful delicacy, without hysteria or overt preaching. Nevertheless, it earned Egoyan an Oscar nomination. read more...

Cloak and Dagger (1946)

Fritz Lang's first post-war picture Cloak and Dagger sends nuclear scientist Gary Cooper (how many actors can actually pull off a nuclear scientist?) into Germany to find a colleague being held by the Germans. And information she provides leads to yet another scientist. While on the lam, Cooper falls in love with Lilli Palmer, but their happiness is torn apart -- once again -- by cruel fate. Much longer and less focused that You Only Live Once, it's still a vintage Lang picture and worth seeing. Lang originally filmed a different ending, but it was changed for theatrical release and the original footage was subsequently lost. read more...

I, Daniel Blake (2016)

I, Daniel Blake was director Ken Loach's second Cannes Film Festival Palme d'Or winner, after The Wind That Shakes the Barley. It's another example of his brand of keenly-observed social realism, with moments that are genuinely touching mixed with moments of righteous indignation. Loach's frequent screenwriter, Paul Laverty, is back, and while he has a tendency to fall back on simplistic, melodramatic moments, Loach is mostly capable of smoothing them out; this turns out to be one of their best collaborations. read more...
