    La Llorona (2020)

This quasi-horror film, released on Shudder in August of 2020, is also the Guatemalan entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 93rd Academy Awards. Even though it shares a portion of a title with one of the Conjuring universe films (The Curse of La Llorona), this one isn't particularly scary, and relies more on a sense of the unknown and the uncertain. It plays on audience preconceptions, given that the main character isn't anyone we'd want to root for. He's a dictator (Julio Diaz) responsible for a genocide is suddenly released from prison and returns to his family home. Surrounded by chanting protestors, and with most of the servants quitting, the family goes about life the best they can. But when a strange new girl, Alma (María Mercedes Coroy) comes on board, and the dictator's increasingly frequent delusions and illicit behavior bring things to a new level of unsettling chaos. read more...

      Maps to the Stars (2015)

The main problem with David Cronenberg's Maps to the Stars isn't really in the film it all. It's just the fact that there are already so many movies about the seamy underbelly of Hollywood, and how self-centered everyone there is and how ridiculous the entire business is. If you've seen a few of these movies, you may not think you're seeing anything new or special here. But Cronenberg is one of the greatest directors alive, and the unique and fascinating way in which he sees things is reason enough to watch. read more...

      Dark City (1998)

One of the most amazing things about Dark City is that it was made from an original screenplay, written by Lem Dobbs, David S. Goyer and director Alex Proyas. When was the last time you saw a movie that was not only not based on a book, TV show, comic book, video game, song, or another movie, but was actually a new story, something you hadn't seen before? (For an example, look at the Oscar nominees for Best Original Screenplay -- all formula stuff we've seen reworked a hundred times.) read more...

      The Wailing (2016)

This horror film from South Korea quietly became one of the highest rated movies of 2016 on Rotten Tomatoes, winding up with 99% approval based on 68 reviews. It sports a daunting 156-minute running time, but once started, it establishes a fascinating rhythm that never lets up. The Wailing (2016) begins almost as a comedy as a bumbling cop Jong-goo (Kwak Do-won) shows up at the scene of a gruesome murder; it seems to have been caused by a spreading sickness, possibly perpetrated (although unlikely) by mushrooms. The source of the problem seems to be a mysterious, reclusive Japanese man (Jun Kunimura). read more...
