The Limey (1999)

Steven Soderbergh has one of the most interesting and diverse track records of any director. After his huge Sundance success sex, lies & videotape (1989), he turned to a black-and-white surreal mystery story, Kafka (1991), from a screenplay by the legendary Lem Dobbs, which quickly disappeared. His rather mainstream King of the Hill (1993) was another critical hit, and his The Underneath (1995) quickly disappeared. He then directed a Spalding Gray monologue, Gray's Anatomy (1996), and a really strange, very low-budget, very independent movie starring himself, Schizopolis (1997). Back in the mainstream, he directed one of last year's best movies, the Elmore Leonard crime story Out of Sight, which made far less money than it deserved. read more...

Ginger & Fred (1986)

Federico Fellini's career can almost be traced across a line chart. When he began, he partially kept to his Neo-Realism roots (Variety Lights, The White Sheik, etc.). Soon after, he abandoned them for less realistic, more dreamlike films like La Dolce Vita (1960) and 8 1/2 (1963) before dissolving completely into phantasmagoric excess (Juliet of the Spirits, Satyricon). But at some point after that, as he approached retirement age, he merged into a more wistful approach, half-nostalgic and half-fantastical. These later films don't enjoy the reputation of Fellini's earlier works, but then again, few films made by senior citizens do. read more...

    Crip Camp (2020)

This powerful, forward-thinking documentary begins at the carefree days of the summer camp, Camp Jened, which ran from 1951 to 1977, where its disabled campers were treated as human beings, given chances to shine, and even finding romance and sex. But the bulk of the film deals with an important 1977 protest in San Francisco, led by Judy Heumann, demanding federal regulations guaranteeing civil rights for the disabled. The protest soon escalated into a sit-in that lasted 28 days, not easy for some of the disabled folks that attended it, as they were without some of the services and equipment that made their lives livable. Few local news outlets bothered to cover the story, but groups like the Black Panthers showed up to help, serving meals. The movie features tons of candid archival footage, as well as some modern-day talking head interviews with Heumann and others, giving the story the kind of respect and attention it deserved all along. It was executive produced by Barack and Michelle Obama. read more...

    Captain Fantastic (2016)

Written and directed by Matt Ross, Captain Fantastic starts a little rough, with a young man hunting a deer in the woods. It seems as if this is going to be another intense, obsessed, heavy-handed parable about mankind's foibles, but Captain Fantastic quickly rights itself, establishing a warmly humorous, and compassionate tone. read more...

    21 Grams (2003)

Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu may be the most talented Quentin Tarantino knockoff around. His accomplished feature debut Amores Perros borrowed the twisted three-act structure from Pulp Fiction and even clocked in at about the same running time. Inarritu nurses the same taste for shocking violence and unexpected turns in storylines. And, like Tarantino, he follows the least expected character into a completely unexpected new arena. read more...
