Santa Sangre (1989)

This bizarre, incredible movie has director Alejandro Jodorowsky's handprints all over it, even though one of its central images involves characters without arms. Partly based on Jodorowsky's own childhood, and featuring many of his children as actors, it's set in a circus and centered around Fenix (played as a child by Adán Jodorowsky and as a young adult by Axel Jodorowsky). He performs in the ring as a child magician, while his father is a knife thrower and his mother is a trapeze artist. He falls in love with a deaf-mute girl, while his father is having an affair with the tattooed woman, and his mother is the head of a strange religious cult that considers a young raped girl with severed arms its patron saint. Everything falls apart, when, eventually, the mother discovers the father's affair; she burns his genitals with acid, but he cuts off her arms. As an adult, Fenix escapes from an asylum and his mother forces him to be her "arms," going on a murder spree. There's also an elephant funeral, painful tattooing, little people, cocaine, prostitutes, dreams, raw fish-eating, and other odd, unsettling, graphic, and gory stuff. It's a bit slow, definitely a bit surreal, and certainly provocative. Fans of Jodorowsky need to see it, but others will wonder what the hell is going on. (Roger Ebert selected it as one of the ten best films of 1990.) read more...

Videodrome (1983)

Released in 1983, David Cronenberg's Videodrome now seems, with hindsight, one of his best and most prophetic films. A small-time cable channel programmer, Max Renn (James Woods) is a kind of sleaze merchant who plays porn on the airwaves. He's on the lookout for the next big thing, and he thinks he finds it in a program called "Videodrome," that features realistic whipping and torture. It turns out that the show doesn't exist and the tape that Max watched actually sends out a signal that causes brain tumors and hallucinations. read more...

Mandy (2018)

From the son of the director of Rambo: First Blood Part II comes this unbelievably bizarre, disturbing revenge film, slowed down and stretched out like a fever dream. The film is often decorated with gauzy shimmers, scratches of light, that stretch across the screen as if we were indeed half asleep. The plot of Mandy is simple enough to describe. It's 1983, and lumberjack Red Miller (Nicolas Cage) and his beloved Mandy (Andrea Riseborough) live in a remote cabin in the woods. While Red works, Mandy loves to read paperback sci-fi novels and draw. One day, the leader of a sinister religious cult, Jeremiah Sand (Linus Roache), spots Mandy and decides to take her. Red is tied up with barbed wire and forced to watch as she is tortured beyond belief. Then, he visits his pal Caruthers (Bill Duke), grabs his trusty crossbow, forges a kind of futuristic steel axelike weapon, and hits the road to find and kill every last one of the bastards. What's shocking is that director Panos Cosmatos doesn't milk any of this for thrills or tension. Paced a little like a David Lynch or Stanley Kubrick picture, it's all about creating a mood, a visualization of such darkness and evil that it can only recall the most disturbing movies of the grindhouse era (Wes Craven's The Last House on the Left comes to mind). The late Jóhann Jóhannsson provided the incredible score, one of his final works before his untimely death. read more...

The Ornithologist (2017)

The Portuguese director João Pedro Rodrigues (O Fantasma, Two Drifters, To Die Like a Man) is usually puzzling, and polarizing. I tend to like his films, but he tends to alienate many critics. He's openly gay but doesn't show gay themes in a soft or coddling way. He can be absurd and surreal, but not necessarily at the same time. His new The Ornithologist feels like it tiptoes around territory previously explored by David Lynch, Andrei Tarkovsky, and Alejandro Jodorowsky, and it had me for most of its running time, but as it reaches the final ten or so minutes, it more or less dives off a cliff. It lost me. read more...

My Own Private Idaho (1991)

Gus Van Sant's My Own Private Idaho was my favorite film in 1991. I saw it three times in the theater (easy, given that I worked at a movie theater and could get free passes to it). I was drawn to it perhaps the way earlier audiences might have been drawn to an outlaw film like Rebel Without a Cause. It's a mixed-up grab bag of linear storytelling and experimental techniques, with elements of Shakespeare mashed up against a totally modern story of sexualized teens. River Phoenix gives perhaps the strongest performance of his remarkable, mercurial, and tragically short career as Mike, a narcoleptic street hustler. While servicing a client, he meets Scott Favor (Keanu Reeves), a fellow hustler who belongs to a wealthy family. They begin to hang out together, and with a Falstaff-like figure. They travel, there's a betrayal, a song by the Pogues, and things drift ever onward like a road that goes all the way around the world. It's as touching a portrait of loneliness and need as was ever created in the American independent cinema. read more...
