The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)

James Thurber's 1939 short story The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is one of those items they make everyone read in school. The difference is that it's really enjoyable, even if you're being forced. It's a very simple story of just a few pages that takes place over the course of maybe an hour as Walter Mitty goes shopping with his wife and imagines four different detailed fantasies. read more...

Seventh Heaven (1927)

Frank Borzage's lovely gem Seventh Heaven (1927) is set on the eve of World War I and stars Oscar winner Janet Gaynor with her big-eyed, small doll's face. She plays a Paris gamine, terrorized by her absinthe-addled older sister. Charles Farrell plays a sewer worker-turned-street washer who rescues her by taking her in. Borzage -- who also won an Oscar -- directs with an intuitive sense of emotional temperature; he keeps things boiling under the surface while the screen only registers a simmer. Gaynor won a Best Actress Oscar for this and two other movies (Sunrise and Street Angel) from the same year. Writer Benjamin Glazer also won an Oscar. read more...

The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938)

Most folks consider this 1938 Technicolor classic the definitive Robin Hood film, though Errol Flynn doesn't quite have the sheer physical abandon that Douglas Fairbanks exhibited in the 1922 version. When Flynn tries to let forth a hearty laugh, it sounds phony and forced. Still, when he slings a deer over his shoulders and swaggers over to Prince John's dinner table, he's certainly commanding. read more...

Only Angels Have Wings (1939)

Dark Victory, Gone With the Wind, Goodbye Mr. Chips, Love Affair, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Ninotchka, Of Mice and Men, Stagecoach, The Wizard of Oz and Wuthering Heights. This was the lineup of the 1939 Academy Awards, considered by many to be the finest year for movies. But, typical of the Academy, they forgot perhaps the best film of the lot, and not because it was some forgotten, no-budget indie either. read more...
