Berberian Sound Studio (2013)

Back in the glory days of Italian Cinema, when Westerns and cop movies and horror movies were cranked out by the hundreds and could get away with almost anything, many American and English actors were invited to join in. Clint Eastwood was the most famous example, but you can find everyone from Chuck Connors to Boris Karloff starring in these films. Now we have the amazing Berberian Sound Studio, a movie by an English director that pays tribute to this great period. read more...

Carnival of Souls (1962)

Carnival of Souls (1962) was a horror film directed by "Herk" Harvey, whose steady job was making industrial films in Kansas. He and his screenwriter, John Clifford, decided that they wanted to break away from those and make something along the lines of Ingmar Bergman and Jean Cocteau, but since their budget was small, and Harvey wanted to center the story around an abandoned carnival, the horror story was born. (Presumably, George A. Romero saw it in 1962 and it inspired him to make Night of the Living Dead.) read more...

The Tenant (1976)

The Tenant is one of Roman Polanski's greatest and darkest films, even more so considering he cast himself in the lead role, effectively putting himself through hell. A timid clerk rents a Paris apartment formerly occupied by a suicide victim and he slowly goes mad, finding teeth embedded in the wall and trying on the dead girl's clothes. At times we believe that the neighbors are tormenting him or that the dead girl is somehow haunting the room. Some scenes are so subtly psychotic that you may not quite realize how anxious you are until the final fadeout. read more...

Hour of the Wolf (1968)

Full of ghosts and shock-cuts, Hour of the Wolf (1968) is the closest Bergman ever came to making a flat-out horror film. Max Von Sydow stars as a reclusive artist who retreats with his wife (Liv Ullmann) to a remote island to work. Abrasive and creepy "neighbors" begin to bother him, though they're all just spooks -- phantoms of his mind. Unfortunately, the artist's wife begins to see them too. Some of the images, such as one of a young boy staring at Von Sydow as he's fishing, will haunt you long afterwards. The film is told from Ullmann's point of view, after the artist is dead. She speaks directly to the camera, and "film crew" noises can be heard during the opening credits, reminding us from the start that it's only a movie. read more...

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (1992)

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992) was lambasted by critics and lumped in among the worst movies of the year. Viewers expected something like Lynch's popular TV show of the same name, or perhaps an answer to the "Who Killed Laura Palmer?" question. But instead Lynch gave them a horrific portrait of a girl (Sheryl Lee) who stepped over to the wrong side of the tracks one time too often and was unable to return. Set before the events in the TV series, the film contains tons of nightmare imagery that looks filtered through fluorescent lights and often goes unanswered. (Chris Isaak plays an FBI agent who simply disappears after retrieving a ring on the ground.) It's a seriously underrated work and one of Lynch's purest dives into his own twisted soul. read more...
