A Little Princess (1995)

Based on a 1905 book by Frances Hodgson Burnett, A Little Princess really puts its young girl protagonist through the ringer, and it can be tough going, but the rewards are great. Sara Crewe (Liesel Matthews) has been raised in India, feasting on romantic fairy tales that she imagines with vivid colors. read more...

Mulan (2020)

Truthfully, Disney's slate of live-action remakes of its older, animated properties is somewhat problematic. It's hard to disguise the fact that they are largely easy cash-grabs. And, disappointingly, the more personal, more experimental entries, like Tim Burton's Dumbo and David Lowery's Pete's Dragon — the ones I like best — have fared the most poorly of the bunch. The ones that stick closest to the originals, like faithful cover versions of beloved songs, seem to have pleased audiences far more. Perhaps they're just comfortable. read more...

Hugo (2011)

It's appropriate to bring up movie history in this review, since Hugo is steeped in not only movie history, but also the passion for discovering movies, for watching movies, and for thinking about their power. But this movie history goes back a lot further than Scorsese himself, and Star Wars, far back into a time that, despite the wealth of information available, is relatively unknown to movie buffs today. read more...

Treasure Planet (2002)

Taking a new approach for Disney's 43rd animated feature, filmmakers Ron Clements and John Musker (The Little Mermaid, etc.) departed a bit from a classic source, Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island, to make this sci-fi hybrid. In a further hybrid, the film combines hand-drawn characters against computer-generated backgrounds and effects. The result is different, but not unpleasant. read more...

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991)

Director Nicholas Meyer (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan) returned to this film series and delivered arguably the best entry featuring the original crew. Going back to his own earlier success, The Seven Per-Cent Solution, he incorporated a little Sherlock Holmes into this story of a peace conference gone wrong. Just after an uneasy dinner between humans and Klingons, the unsuspecting Klingon ship is fired upon, killing the Klingon chancellor. Kirk (William Shatner) and Dr.McCoy (DeForest Kelley) are arrested and sent to a mining planet, while Spock (Leonard Nimoy) tries to solve the mystery, Holmes-style. read more...
