The Treasure (2016)

Romanian director Corneliu Porumboiu (12:08 East of Bucharest, Police, Adjective) returns with this incredibly dry comedy. On the surface, The Treasure couldn't be simpler. Working class man Costi (Toma Cuzin) is approached by out-of-work neighbor Adrian (Adrian Purcarescu), who asks to borrow money to rent a metal detector. He believes that he may have a fortune buried beneath his property, hidden there during Romania's turbulent past. Together they go to the property, accompanied by the grumpy metal detector man, Cornel (Corneliu Cozmei), and begin searching. The search is unremarkable, with arguments over the detector and how deep to dig, with the men standing in each other's way. Things get complicated due to one of Romania's laws, that all "treasure" must be reported to the police. Then comes the remarkable ending; even if you've read a number of O. Henry-type stories, this one is new. Porumboiu subtly layers history and politics into his movie, and even if The Treasure is smaller and lower-key than his earlier films, it establishes him as one of potential masters of non-English cinema in 2016. read more...

Police, Adjective (2009)

The Romanian New Wave continues at full force with this second film by director Corneliu Porumboiu (12:08 East of Bucharest). Police, Adjective is a less obvious comedy than the director's previous film, and it's a good deal drier and slyer. You could start by calling it a police procedural, but here it's all procedure and hardly any police. read more...

I Was Born, But... (1932)

Yasujiro Ozu's I Was Born, But... (1932) is a masterpiece, and one of Ozu's three or four greatest works. It's an impossibly delicate balance of bittersweet and comedy. Two boys face a daily regimen of bullies and other troubles at school, but their world collapses when they discover that their father must kowtow to a much more powerful boss, and worse, that the boss's son goes to school with them. They decide to go on a hunger strike to show their disgust and disappointment. read more...

Mr. Death: The Rise and Fall of Fred A. Leuchter, Jr. (1999)

Errol Morris has carved his niche with films about freaks and losers: the pet cemetery owners in Gates of Heaven (1978), the innocent man on death row in The Thin Blue Line (1988), palsied scientist Steven Hawking in A Brief History of Time (1992), and four strange men trying to tame nature in Fast, Cheap & Out of Control (1997). But Fred Leuchter is his strangest subject by far, which renders Mr. Death: The Rise and Fall of Fred Leuchter Jr. Morris' most potent film, his masterpiece. The year 2000 will be hard-pressed to come up with a better film than this. It's already a candidate for my list of the best films of the year. read more...
