Shaun the Sheep Movie (2015)

Aardman's Shaun the Sheep Movie is a miraculous thing. It's an animated movie that embraces true physical humor, as the likes of Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton once did. It is, in essence, a silent movie, with no spoken words. Characters grunt and mumble and make verbal noises, and these noises often indicate intent or emotion, and there are a few pop songs, but not one actual word is spoken. read more...

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 (2013)

Handed over to a new team of filmmakers, the sequel to Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (2009) fares a bit better than its predecessor. Based loosely on the 1978 children's book by Judi and Ron Barrett, the earlier film felt too forced, with character development uncomfortably shoved into plot developments like a peanut butter and pickle sandwich. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 -- which was at some point subtitled "Revenge of the Leftovers" -- uses memories of the already-established characters and spends more time on its simple theme: man and nature living in harmony. read more...

The Grinch (2018)

This second big-screen re-do of Dr. Seuss's 1957 kids' book and Chuck Jones's1966 How the Grinch Stole Christmas! TV special is a little lightweight, but it's a drastic improvement over the gaudy, vulgar 2000 live-action movie by Ron Howard. To tell the truth, this Grinch's brevity and bright, bold colors may be just the kind of thing to relax and get lost in this holiday season. The Grinch has been softened a little so that he's not just mean for mean's sake; now he's mean because he's actually sad. This may sound silly, but it actually makes more sense, and the transformation from naughty to nice is more satisfying. (Before, the mean Grinch was so much more fun than the nice one.) Plus, now we don't have to endure the character being so darn nasty to his dog, Max. read more...

Hotel Transylvania 2 (2015)

I did not see the first Hotel Transylvania (2012), but even without the benefit of that experience I believe I was able to follow Hotel Transylvania 2 (as did my nine year-old son). Drac (voiced by Adam Sandler) is the proprietor of the title hotel, a place for monsters that now allows humans. His vampire daughter Mavis (voiced by Selena Gomez) has married a human, Jonathan (voiced by Andy Samberg), and they now have a little baby boy, Dennis. The conflict this time is over whether Dennis will turn out to be a human or a vampire (it takes until about age 5 for a vampire's teeth to come in). Trying other methods, such as a mirror, doesn't seem to occur to our characters. In any case, Mavis has begun to consider moving to Jonathan's hometown to Santa Cruz, and Drac thinks that if he can "encourage" Dennis's vampiric tendencies, then his daughter will stay. Of course, this leads to a "lie" plot, wherein Drac tricks Mavis into going away for a vacation while he and the other monsters take a road trip to demonstrate to Dennis how monsters really live. read more...

Despicable Me 3 (2017)

Perhaps Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) and Lucy (voiced by Kristen Wiig) should have been allowed to live happily ever after following the wonderful Despicable Me 2. Now it's almost as if they have wedding guests that refuse to go home. Despicable Me 3 comes up with some decent enough new ideas and subplots, but there are perhaps too many of them, too much going on, and it all feels very on-the-surface. A new bad guy, Balthazar Bratt (voiced by Trey Parker) is on the loose. He provides some chuckles; he's a leftover from a hit, prematurely canceled 1980s TV show and he lives consistently in the 1980s. Then, Gru meets his twin brother Dru, who has flowing blonde hair and wishes to turn to a life of crime with his brother. Most of the Minions walk out on Gru, and little Agnes (voiced by Nev Scharrel) learns that unicorns may be real and becomes obsessed with catching one. There is much racing around, climbing, and escaping, and the filmmakers continue to have fun with the odd, long, pointy shapes of Gru and Lucy's bodies. There are even a few laughs, thanks to the brilliant comic timing of our stars, but, like the Minions spinoff, this one feels pretty slight, and not particularly necessary. read more...
