Brick (2006)

Maybe it's a sign that people are breathlessly describing Rian Johnson's Brick as a teenage detective movie -- without irony. After all, we live in a world where irony protrudes from every little surface like corkscrews. It makes us feel intelligent and superior, and in control of a world that often seems irrational and flat-out stupid. read more...

Calvary (2014)

The brother of playwright/filmmaker Martin McDonagh (In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths), John Michael McDonagh's previous film The Guard was great fun, but his new Calvary is something a bit more. McDonagh brings on actor Brendan Gleeson as well as cinematographer Larry Smith from the previous film, and this results in a great performance and a beautifully composed film. read more...

    Venus in Fur (2014)

Throughout his entire career, from his feature debut Knife in the Water (1962) to the recent Carnage (2011), director Roman Polanski has specialized in wringing psychological tension from just a few characters (or one character) who are stuck and coming to pieces within limited spaces. In Venus in Fur, that place happens to be in the theater, and because it's based on a play by David Ives, some viewers may find it too stagy or stagebound. However, Polanski does not use the theater setting like a stage, and Venus in Fur moves very much like a movie, and a highly skilled one. read more...

    Swimming Pool (2003)

With his new film Swimming Pool, director Francois Ozon has backtracked slightly for the first time in his career. Not only has he re-enlisted screenwriter Emmanuele Bernheim and star Charlotte Rampling from his acclaimed 2001 hit Under the Sand, but he also deliberately echoes his early 1997 film See the Sea. read more...

    School Daze (1988)

Spike Lee's second feature School Daze was considered something of a classic "sophomore slump," neither as focused as his debut She's Gotta Have It (1986), nor as accomplished as his next film, Do the Right Thing (1989). It's a mess, going all over the place while tackling a wide array of themes for over two hours, with tons of characters, and even musical numbers. It also, unfortunately, looks like it's going to be a comedy, even though it's really not very funny. On the other hand, it is smart and vibrant and it's well worth seeing, even decades later. read more...
