A Christmas Horror Story (2015)

The first official Christmas movie I saw in 2015, A Christmas Horror Story is a very clever and bloody fun anthology. Its four intertwined segments all have roughly the same impact; there's no obvious weak link, as in many anthologies. They cover a good cross-section of subjects and settings, and they even come to a surprisingly twisted conclusion. The editing is solid, finding the perfect beats and mini-cliffhangers before switching stories. The presence of William Shatner helps a great deal, starring in the wraparound sequence as radio DJ "Dangerous Dan," who pulls a double-shift on Christmas Eve to bring us all a little cheer. (He begins drinking egg nog laced with whisky, and eventually switches to straight whisky.) read more...

Undead (2003)

Though filmmakers never seem to run out of ideas for vampire movies, the new crop of zombie movies faintly smacks of desperation. Filmmakers have recently tried for faster zombies, updated backdrops and comedy angles, but no one has yet been able to touch the master, George A. Romero's brilliant quadrilogy (though Shaun of the Dead comes close). Peter and Michael Spierig's new Australian zombie movie, Undead, arrives on U.S. shores two years after its Australia opening and just a couple of weeks after Romero's latest masterpiece, Land of the Dead. Despite a few new ideas and a modicum of entertainment value, Undead ultimately seems irrelevant. read more...

Zombeavers (2015)

In the movie Ed Wood (1994), our intrepid director is in a pitch meeting with a producer. Ed asks, "is there a script?" The producer replies,"Fuck no! But there's a poster!" Over the past century, publishers realized that they could sell just about any old novel if it had a lurid enough cover and an inviting enough title, and it wasn't long before moviemakers did the same. A great title and a great poster were often just enough to get a movie released, and to get ticketbuyers in the seats. After that it didn't really matter if the movie delivered or not. read more...

The Ruins (2008)

The new horror film The Ruins is not a remake or even a copy of any horror film of recent years. We're talking first-class material, adapted from a novel by Scott B. Smith, who was nominated for an Oscar for his screenplay for A Simple Plan (1998), adapted from his own 1993 book. (See my interview.) The Ruins is a terrific airplane novel, surprising and gripping, and Dreamworks could have made an outstanding film of it. But they threw it away. read more...

V/H/S: Viral (2014)

The third movie in the series, after V/H/S (2012) and V/H/S/2 (2013), V/H/S: Viral abandons the idea of the creepy house filled with old videocassettes. Even though the movie seems to have built-in, recurring technical errors -- fizzling out and showing buried, half-erased images -- it has little to do with old-fashioned formats. Instead, it concentrates more on the "viral" theme, and in doing so, the series spins off in an interesting new direction. read more...
