The Vatican Tapes (2015)

Director Mark Neveldine is known for his looney, kinetic cult movies (Crank, Gamer, Crank: High Voltage, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance), but his demon-possession movie, despite a shock ending, can't quite get past the limitations of a genre that peaked with The Exorcist (1973). The Vatican Tapes begins with the idea that the Vatican has recorded proof of dozens of possessions, but then settles in on a rather dull example of one particular case. read more...

Morgan (2016)

Despite a great cast and similarities to Ex Machina, this sci-fi movie doesn't really have much to say outside of a vague cautionary message, and provides few thrills other than many bloody killings. read more...

The Quiet Ones (2014)

Supposedly based on a true story, one that four different writers then adapted to the screen, The Quiet Ones doesn't actually tell a story or develop any kind of rising suspense or tingling chills so much as it does present a series of jump-shocks and sudden, loud noises. Half of these are actually related to the movie, and the other half are false scares, like a champagne cork going off, or someone accidentally dropping something. read more...

Darkman (1990)

Upon its initial release, Darkman was frequently compared to Dick Tracy and Batman, mainly because of the similar, highly artificial comic book-look, as well as similar musical scores by Danny Elfman on all three films. Now that the smoke has cleared, and Hollywood has moved onto other trends, we have Darkman, clear and plain and bright as day (or dark as night). It deserves a second look. read more...

Ghost in the Shell (1995)

Along with Akira, Mamoru Oshii's Ghost in the Shell was one of the most influential of all anime films. Released in a dubbed version in American theaters in the spring of 1996, it reached a wider audience than other anime without ever feeling compromised. It felt like an essential movie of its moment, and seeing it again proves that it's even more relevant today, not to mention one of the flat-out best and most entertaining anime ever made. read more...
