Distant Voices, Still Lives (1988)

This forgotten gem from the 1980s gets a Blu-ray release at long last. A feature directing debut by the acclaimed English filmmaker Terence Davies, Distant Voices, Still Lives (1988) is a two-parter (part one is "Distant Voices" and part two is "Still Lives"). Both parts tells the story of a family living in Liverpool during the 1940s and 1950s, with their trials and tribulations, weddings and funerals. Pete Postlethwaite plays the father, sometimes tender, but frequently cruel, although not everything is grim and depressing here. Davies uses popular music and the concept of memory to tell his story, deliberately allowing artificiality and staginess in his scenes, but always in a way that flows softly and lyrically. It's a beautifully poetic movie, and a small masterpiece. read more...

Vagabond (1985)

Agnes Varda's great film about the last days of a drifting, homeless girl is simultaneously beautiful in form and heartbreaking in content. It opens with Varda's own voice, narrating. A girl (Sandrine Bonnaire) is dead in a ditch, frozen, and Vagabond wonders who she was, what might have happened to her and what led her to this end. The film plays out in segments as the girl occasionally works odd jobs for spending money, scrounges a meal, sleeps in her tent, and sometimes makes small connections with people. Varda's camera frequently drifts in long takes from right to left, suggesting someone going the wrong way, or backwards, or perhaps towards death. She makes lovely use of chilly exteriors and sometimes a splotch of color, like a discarded red scarf. In the end, of course, the girl is ultimately unknowable — and perhaps never even knew herself who she was — but Varda's film is nonetheless an act of empathy, suggesting that we never give up trying. read more...

Waves (2019)

Trey Edward Shults's third feature film Waves resembles a Young Adult novel, at least on the surface. It's the story of two teens dealing with a heavy amount of drama in their young lives. But unlike most YA movies, this one doesn't speak down to its audience, doesn't assume that teens are simpleminded. Instead it's a masterly effort, more fully-realized, emotionally mature, and cinematically inventive than just about anything else out there. read more...

First Reformed (2018)

Coming out of the same film-student club as Martin Scorsese, George Lucas, Brian De Palma, etc., Paul Schrader has always been a highly intelligent filmmaker, but an uneven one. He has made some notable films (Blue Collar, American Gigolo, Cat People, Light Sleeper, Affliction, etc.) and a number of not-very-notable ones. Film scholars might agree that his best work would be his four screenplays for Scorsese (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, The Last Temptation of Christ, and Bringing Out the Dead). But now he has given us a genuine masterpiece, a tough, meticulous howl of pain and passion, First Reformed. read more...

Margaret (2011)

The movie has a long story. It was begun not long after Lonergan's well-received directorial debut You Can Count on Me (2000). Filmed in 2005, it incorporated elements of the George W. Bush administration and the events of 9/11. Lonergan finished the film in a 3-hour cut, but he was contractually obligated to deliver a shorter cut. Several edits went by, including one supervised by Martin Scorsese and Thelma Schoonmaker, and there were several lawsuits. Finally, a 150-minute version was released in theaters in 2011, which received some acclaim, but very small box office. The 186-minute version was released on DVD in 2012. Apparently neither version is an official "director's cut," but the longer version is the one that provoked the most passionate critical response. read more...
