Office Space (1999)

Written and directed by Mike Judge (of TV's Beavis and Butt-Head and King of the Hill), Office Space (1999) is perhaps the most beloved of all office comedies, a bona-fide cult classic with many instantly recognizable, quotable lines. ("We need to talk about your flair." "Excuse me... I believe you have my stapler..." "I'm gonna need you to go ahead come in tomorrow.") Ron Livingston stars as Peter, who hates his soul-sucking office job, claiming that each day is worse than the one before it. While attending hypnotherapy, his therapist dies in the middle of a session and he never snaps out of his trance. He begins feeling happy and carefree, and slacking off at work, which, ironically, makes him very popular and shakes things up, even earning him a promotion. Jennifer Aniston co-stars as a pretty waitress, Joanna, Stephen Root is the pathetic sad-sack Milton, Gary Cole is the smarmy boss Bill Lumbergh, Diedrich Bader is the mullet-head dude Lawrence, and Ajay Naidu and David Herman are Peter's best friends, Samir and Michael Bolton (not the singer... "Why should I change my name? He's the one who sucks.") read more...

A New Leaf (1971)

At one point, Elaine May was best known as the comedy partner of Mike Nichols. When the team split, they both became film directors. Nichols' career is still going: long, prolific, celebrated and terribly bland. May's career was unfairly truncated, completing only four films in the past 40 years. But I'd swap every single one of Nichols' films for those four; they're passionate, bizarre, heartfelt, quirky, and very personal. read more...

Friday After Next (2002)

In 1987, Run-DMC busted a rhyme with "Christmas in Hollis," one of the first visions of Christmas in the 'hood: "It's Christmastime in Hollis, Queens; Mom's cooking chicken and collard greens." Fifteen years later, writer/actor/rapper Ice Cube follows suit 15 with the first Christmas movie set in the 'hood. Friday After Next marks the third film in Cube's laid-back Friday series. And like National Lampoon's Vacation series, this film probably will become a new holiday favorite, even though it's not quite as funny as the first one. (Still, I'm already looking forward to seeing Friday After Next on video next Christmas.) read more...

Bitter Melon (2018)

San Francisco filmmaker H.P. Mendoza — a writer, composer, and actor on the terrific Colma: The Musical — delivers this deceptive comedy-drama about a Filipino-American family Christmas. Two sons return home: younger Declan (Jon Norman Schneider) is gay and comes from New York, and older Moe (Brian Rivera) comes from Philadelphia; Moe is married to an African-American woman but has left her behind so as not to upset his conservative family. Unfortunately middle brother Troy (Patrick Epino) still lives at home and rules through his abusive behavior toward his wife (Theresa Navarro) and mother (Amelie Anima). The newly arrived sons try to spend as much time out as they can, but it's not long before they realize that the world would be better off without Troy. A plan to kill him is suggested, briefly laughed at, and then taken seriously. Mendoza balances humor and darkness with amazing deftness, and spends enough time with each character so that they move beyond their one-line descriptions. read more...

Mean Girls (2004)

Tina Fey wrote the clever screenplay for Mean Girls (2004), taking a realistic look at just how vicious high school girls could possibly be to each other (many saw it as an update of Heathers, from 1989). It succeeds in straddling a line between cynicism and genuine care, and it gets pretty dark even if Fey reportedly had to soften her original script to get the PG-13 rating. Lindsay Lohan stars, before being ground up into tabloid headline fodder, as Cady, who returns with her parents to the U.S. after being raised in Africa. She immediately tangles with three popular, and dangerous "mean girls" (Rachel McAdams, Lacey Chabert, and Amanda Seyfried). One scene takes place at the winter talent show as the girls perform "Jingle Bell Rock" in sexy Santa outfits. read more...
