    To Be Takei (2014)

I settled down to Jennifer M. Kroot's To Be Takei as a longtime Star Trek fan, though not quite a "trekkie," who prefers the original series and the original cast to anything else. I was hoping for at least a fun fan documentary about actor George Takei, who played Sulu. But what I got instead was an often profound documentary about racism, forgiveness, bigotry, empathy, and love. The movie tackles its issues with strength, but without rage. read more...

      Blood Brother (2013)

Not everyone has a best friend like Rocky Braat. Most best friends go to restaurants or bars or games or movies, but Rocky goes to India. While there, he ends up volunteering at an AIDS hostel for children. This life decision has such a profound effect on Rocky, that Rocky invites his best friend Steve Hoover to visit him there. Steve also decides to make a documentary about it. read more...

      RBG (2018)

Betsy West and Julie Cohen's documentary RBG is about the awesome Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. It traces her early achievements, fighting against a male-led system, advocating for gender equality in law, her relationship with her husband Martin Ginsburg — who seemed to compliment her perfectly — and her rise to stardom, being appointed to the court by President Clinton in 1993 and finally becoming a pop culture icon ("The Notorious RBG"). While it could have dug deeper, and been more personal, that seems unlikely given the all-business nature of Ms. Ginsberg. And, either way, it's still wonderfully entertaining and informative. It's heartening to learn of the friendship between the liberal-leaning RBG and the late, conservative-leaning justice Antonin Scalia; if only friendships like those were more common today. read more...

        Concussion (2015)

Concussion does a fine job making the argument that football is dangerous and causes brain damage, but that information could have been relayed just as easily in a documentary or a news story. This is a fiction film, and as fiction, it doesn't completely do its job. Will Smith plays Dr. Bennet Omalu, giving a fully-rounded performance; he's a Nigerian immigrant with an impressive list of degrees, currently working in the Pittsburgh coroner's office. He treats each corpse with respect, speaking to it, using patience and intuition to find its cause of death. His life changes when the body of ex-Steelers star Mike Webster (David Morse) turns up; Omalu can't quite pinpoint what happened. When another pro football player comes in, he begins to see a pattern and commences researching. From there, the movie turns into a man-against-the-system story, with the NFL bigwigs acting as money-grubbing bad guys, doing anything in their power, from threats to sly manipulation, to save their profit margin. The movie does take time out to appreciate the beauty of football as well as the savagery of it, but the emotional impact isn't enough to make any real-life changes; the movie isn't memorable. Albert Brooks adds a little energy to his role as Omalu's boss, but other roles, including one for love interest Gugu Mbatha-Raw, are underwritten. read more...

        Wadjda (2013)

Haifaa Al-Mansour is the first female filmmaker in Saudi Arabia, and Wadjda is the first feature film directed by a woman in Saudi Arabia. Apparently, she was forced to do most of her work via monitors and walkie-talkies from the inside of a van, since men and women are not allowed to be seen working together. read more...
