    Bad Education (2020)

Director Cory Finley follows up his striking debut Thoroughbreds with this queasy true-story movie, which debuted April 25, 2020 on HBO. In Bad Education (not to be confused with Pedro Almodovar's 2004 movie of the same name), Hugh Jackman plays Frank Tassone, superintendent of the Roslyn district of New York. He's well-dressed and always seems to know what to say, whether to a struggling student or to a prodding grown-up. And he's truly dedicated to bringing his school to #1, hopefully with the approval of a new multi-million-dollar skywalk. Unfortunately, assistant superintendent Pamela Gluckin (Allison Janney) is caught embezzling. Frank tries to keep the incident quiet, but an intrepid student reporter, Rachel Bhargava (Geraldine Viswanathan), keeps digging until she finds an even darker truth. Ray Romano plays a friend and colleague of Frank's, dismayed at what he learns. Alex Wolff plays the editor of the school newspaper, worried about his college career if he decides to run Rachel's story. Finley gets terrific performances, making the characters real, and awful, at the same time. He bathes everything in a kind of icky fluorescent light, and the atmosphere is so thick with artificiality and cover-up that we can almost smell Frank's sickly cologne. read more...

      Murder by Decree (1979)

This may be my favorite Sherlock Holmes movie, though Terence Fisher's The Hound of the Baskervilles (1959) comes close. Christopher Plummer plays the intrepid detective, with James Mason as an upright Dr. Watson. Directed by Bob Clark (Black Christmas), the film has a vivid period touch, with plenty of clever staging and some off-kilter angles, and even a little dark humor (such as the scene in which Holmes helps Watson capture the last pea on his plate). But the real selling point of this movie is the villain: Jack the Ripper. An excellent cast -- including Geneviève Bujold as a patient in an asylum and John Gielgud as a Prime Minister -- helps round things out. For some reason, this terrific movie never seems to have risen above cult status. Anchor Bay's 2003 DVD has gone out of print, but Kino Lorber re-issued it on Blu-ray in 2020, including Clark's excellent commentary track (he passed away in 2007), plus a new commentary by film historians Howard S. Berger and Steve Mitchell, and trailers for this and four other films. read more...

The Hound of the Baskervilles (1959)

This is my favorite of the movies adapted from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's novel, and the first one in color. It's also one of the best movies to come from the beloved Hammer Studios' horror line. Peter Cushing makes a great Sherlock Holmes, and even looks like the character; it's a role he was born to play. Christopher Lee plays Sir Henry Baskerville, leaving André Morell in the role of Doctor Watson. The plot, of course, has Holmes investigating the legend of a murderous hellhound on the moors. Terence Fisher, the most beloved of the Hammer horror directors, is at the helm. read more...

        Crooked House (2017)

Based on an Agatha Christie novel, this mystery is beautifully shot with great set design but suffers from its odd pace: too fast to pick up on character nuance, but too slow to generate any suspense. read more...

          Lansky (2021)

Not much different than the plethora of gangster movies that populated cinemas of the 1990s, Lansky gets by on Keitel's impressive performance, as well on a handful of surprising story twists. read more...
