The Son of the Sheik (1926)

Though definitely recommended, Rudolph Valentino's most famous pair of movies, The Sheik (1921) and The Son of the Sheik (1926), probably don't hold up today as well as other classic silent-era films do. In addition to their slightly yucky storylines, Valentino's legendary star quality hasn't aged as beautifully as one might have thought. His acting style is pretty big by today's standards (he bugs out his eyes and flares his nostrils a lot), but he really did have that extraordinary charisma, that huge sex appeal, that everyone talks about. His olive skin and heavy-lidded eyes as well as a certain unnamable something make him easy to watch. read more...

The Exception (2017)

This quasi-biographical drama could have been a dry-as-a-bone history lesson, filled with exposition and explanation, but instead it turns into a glossy romance; it's soft, but ripe and full-blooded. read more...

Paris Blues (1961)

One usually doesn't hear much about Paris Blues (1961) unless writers are talking about that elusive genre known as "jazz films." Frankly, the movie's two stars received much more attention the same year for two other films, Paul Newman in The Hustler and Sidney Poitier in A Raisin in the Sun. But Paris Blues is a film that seems happy noodling about, riding its highs and lows with equal fascination. read more...
