    The Specialists (1969)

I love Sergio Corbucci's Westerns, and I'm usually willing to make some concessions, but something about The Specialists just doesn't quite work. It could be that French star Johnny Halliday just isn't very interesting, at least as a gunslinger. Or it could be those weird hippie characters that just don't seem to fit. It could be the lack of an Ennio Morricone score. Or it could be the way that the simple revenge story — Halliday plays a man named Hud who wishes to avenge the wrongful death of his brother — seems to continually wander off track. Even the title doesn't seem to apply the story. It still has some strong imagery — such as the one-handed villain "El Diablo," or the naked people crawling up the street — and for completists, it will be worth seeing. But beginners should start elsewhere. Kino Lorber released it on Blu-ray for 2020. It comes with an Alex Cox commentary track, and even he seems to be trying very hard to find worthwhile things to talk about. The disc also includes trailers. read more...

    Selah and the Spades (2020)

Debuting Friday, April 17, 2020 on Amazon Prime, Selah and the Spades is not a strong film, but it's also not too bad. I'm giving it an extra half-star for the same reason many of my colleagues have. It's the debut feature by Tayarisha Poe, and given that she's a black female, and given that the number of black female film directors in history is shamefully low — even digging through my own memory I can still only come up with less than a dozen — she gets that many more points for breaking through the barrier. Selah and the Spades has a strong visual style, and a strong attitude, which has also led many of my colleagues to label it "promising." Its flaws mainly lie in its tone, and the fact that it's a high school movie that recalls too many other high school movies. read more...

    Cold Pursuit (2019)

Note: After I saw the movie and wrote the following review, Liam Neeson gave an interview in which he made some problematic comments, which led to a full-bore controversy, including the canceling of the red carpet portion of the film's premiere. In the face of this fallout, which entails a great deal of rage and very little understanding, I have opted to leave my review as it was. read more...

    Miles Ahead (2016)

Don Cheadle has been working on his Miles Davis movie for years now (I interviewed him in 2008 and he was working on it then), and the film that finally emerges seems to have been a tad compromised. It doesn't really even seem to have much of a story to tell. But it's so structurally and rhythmically free-flowing -- so jazzy -- that I think it's still worth a look. read more...

      Torn Curtain (1966)

A strangely muted, dull effort, though still worthy of attention. Paul Newman plays an American who may or may not be a defector. Julie Andrews plays his confused fiancée who decides to follow him to Russia at any cost. Reportedly, Hitchcock and Newman did not get along, and the film also marked the unhappy end of Hitch's collaboration with composer Bernard Herrmann. This gloomy atmosphere seems to permeate the final film, but it contains some breathtaking moments, such as a long, slow, gruesome murder scene. The DVD reconstructs certain alternate scenes with Herrmann's completed score in place, and it's a vast improvement. read more...
