Code of Silence (1985)

In the 1980s, there were action movies aplenty, and even though Chuck Norris was one of the five biggest punching-and-kicking stars, no one really took his movies very seriously. That is, until Code of Silence came along, and Siskel & Ebert surprisingly gave it "two thumbs up" on their review show. It's still a Chuck Norris movie, of course, but it focuses on strong characters, interesting situations, and an appealingly gritty, urban realism. read more...

The Commuter (2018)

The fourth pairing of director Jaume Collet-Serra and star Liam Neeson, this second-tier thriller is far from great, but their usual blend of non-stop action and silly suspense still works like crazy. read more...

An Eye for an Eye (1981)

This Chuck Norris movie is notable for three things: being filmed in San Francisco, having Christopher Lee as the bad guy, and... Chuck Norris. Otherwise, it's a rather clunky affair, and far too long, with cop Chuck seeking revenge for the murder of his partner. His partner's TV reporter girlfriend is also killed, and Chuck hooks up with the cute TV news producer while looking for the bad guys. He gets into a few fights that are a bit too slow and overly-choreographed, but, hey, he's Chuck Norris. Kino Lorber gave this a Blu-ray release in 2015; director Steve Carver provides a commentary track, and there's a trailer. read more...

The Expendables 3 (2014)

The main trouble with The Expendables 3 is that, unlike his Rocky or Rambo franchises, writer/actor and sometime director Sylvester Stallone really doesn't seem to know what it's for. Other than a nostalgic collection of familiar faces, he doesn't appear to have any opinions, ideas, or commentary on the action genre one way or another, and the remaining theme of "teamwork" is stretched thinner and thinner as more cast members come on board. read more...

The Man with the Golden Gun (1974)

Director Guy Hamilton, of Goldfinger, returned to direct this ninth James Bond adventure. It was Hamilton's fourth and final time out on the series, and it was Roger Moore's second time in the lead role. He hadn't yet sunk into the silliness of his later films, although this movie does contain the unfortunate return of the comical redneck sheriff Pepper (Clifton James) from the previous film, Live and Let Die. (This time the sheriff is on an unlikely vacation in Thailand.) read more...
