    Pasolini (2019)

Abel Ferrara's Pasolini, a fictional, affectionate account of the final bit of the life of filmmaker and writer Pier Paolo Pasolini, was completed all the way back in 2014. It played in European film festivals and then sat for half a decade before finally opened in the United States in 2019. It opened at the Roxie Theater July 5, and I'm coming to it even later than that. But it's worth the wait. While Ferrara is not gay — and the movie has been criticized for its straight views of gay life — he shares other similarities with Pasolini, who was murdered in 1975: Italian, Catholic, and a maverick. Pasolini begins with scenes from the filmmaker's final, controversial film Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom; Ferrara faced similar controversy (to a lesser extent) with his Ms. 45 (1981). read more...

      The Endless (2018)

The chilling, mysterious The Endless (2017) is a true low-budget discovery, with enough ideas and surprises for many movies. Co-directed by Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson, and written by Benson, the movie introduces two brothers, Aaron and Justin (played by the filmmakers), who were raised in a commune, but escaped. Justin, the eldest, believes that it was run by an evil cult and that they're better off where they are, living in civilization and eating cups-o-noodles. But Aaron remembers all of it fondly, and misses it. When they receive a strange videotape indicating that their former friends are still alive, Aaron wants to visit. Justin warily agrees, and as the visit becomes longer and longer, the brothers discover many weird, disturbing secrets, and even more questions, such as: what's the reason behind the double moons? Moorhead and Benson get multitudes from their cast, their effortless FX, and simple locations, and it will surely leave heads spinning. read more...

        Primer (2004)

Brainy, technical, and talky, this low-budget sci-fi movie breaks the rules of storytelling; it's deliberately confusing, but its absolute confidence makes it all the more alluring and fascinating. read more...

        Tully (2018)

I was lucky enough to see Jason Reitman's Tully at the San Francisco Film Festival, because it has given me enough time to truly ponder its depths. I now think it's the best film Reitman has made in a career of slightly overpraised good films (Juno, Up in the Air, Young Adult) some flat-out bad ones (Labor Day; Men, Women & Children), and an unsung gem (Thank You for Smoking). It comes from a screenplay by the Oscar-winner Diablo Cody, who wrote Juno and Young Adult; it's her third time working with Reitman and her second time working with star Charlize Theron, who starred in Young Adult. I'll stop referencing earlier movies now, because Tully leaves them all behind. read more...

          Demolition (2016)

Only about halfway successful, this quirky drama has fine performances and many moments of appealing cuteness and sweetness, but also suffers from ill-fitting tonal choices and heavy-handed metaphors. The story and themes here are strikingly similar to Alexander Payne's bittersweet comedy-drama About Schmidt (2002), but director Jean-Marc Vallée — whose films (The Young Victoria, Dallas Buyers Club, Wild) are usually pitched at Oscar voters — opts for hand-held cinematography with a grayish, overcast feel, nullifying most of the potential comedy or warmth. read more...
