William Friedkin's 1985 film To Live and Die in L.A. may be one of his very best, though it did not reach the level of acclaim and support of his earlier films The French Connection and The Exorcist. read more...

      The Set-Up (1949)

Director Robert Wise had as good a beginning as anyone, editing Orson Welles' first two projects at RKO (Citizen Kane and The Magnificent Ambersons), then becoming a director for that studio's genius "B"-unit producer Val Lewton, helming Curse of the Cat People, Mademoiselle Fifi and The Body Snatcher. read more...

Bad Day at Black Rock (1955)

When Cinemascope first appeared, directors automatically used it to create large-scale movies, filled with spectacle and costumes and whatever else they could think of to fill up the frame. With Bad Day at Black Rock, John Sturges decided to fill it with absence and emptiness. In fact, one of the most important characters in the movie never even appears. read more...

        The Duellists (1977)

Based on a Joseph Conrad story, Ridley Scott's feature debut The Duellists (1977) takes place during the Napoleonic war era -- over three decades during which Feraud (Harvey Keitel) and D'Hubert (Keith Carradine) meet and duel every few years. The origin of the duel is less than silly, and neither man can really remember why they're dueling in the first place. As a director, Scott comes alive during the duel scenes, emphasizing the landscapes -- ranging from wet green to white snowbound. He also keeps the movie feeling small and intimate, despite its grand scope and long timeline. read more...

          Men in War (1957)

I'm a huge fan of director Anthony Mann, but not a huge fan of war films, so Mann's Men in War (1957) was a movie I wasn't exactly looking forward to, but knew I'd have to tackle someday, for better or for worse. Thankfully, it turns out to be a very good film, pure Mann, and I'm glad I saw it. read more...
