Blow Out (1981)

I often have a hard time defending my admiration for Brian De Palma. In this country he's considered a rip-off artist who pillages from Hitchcock, Kubrick, Antonioni and Michael Powell, as well as a misogynist and a violent creep. It gets especially difficult when discussing such obvious turkeys as The Bonfire of the Vanities (1990) and last year's Mission to Mars. But in France he's considered a genius, a visual stylist of the first degree (the influential magazine Cahiers du Cinema voted his film Carlito's Way the best film of the 1990s). read more...

Oldboy (2003)

According to some insiders, Park Chan-wook's Oldboy was just a hair away from winning the 2004 Palm D'Or that eventually went to Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11, which is just as well. Now instead of being an international award winner, it's an extremely cool little gem that can be truly discovered by appreciative fans. (Note: it's actually the middle part of a trilogy, beginning with Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and ending with Lady Vengeance, but it stands on its own.) read more...

Assault on Precinct 13 (1976)

John Carpenter has held onto his fans by remaining true to his specific vision, using the Cinemascope aspect ratio, working within "genre" pictures and living by an old-fashioned Hollywood work ethic. Assault on Precinct 13 is one of Carpenter's best, an uncompromising, ultra-gritty cop story wherein angry gang members try to storm a nearly empty police station. read more...

Hanna (2011)

Hanna is what a futuristic chase movie might look like if Michelangelo Antonioni had decided to make one: eerily framed, and entirely based on the relationship between the characters and their environment, where absences are as important as things present. Joe Wright is the director here, and he leaves behind everything he has previously done. He seems hardened and full of fury, perhaps a response at the unfair way his The Soloist (2009) was received. Hanna is stripped-down, fast, and fantastic. read more...

The Call (2013)

This high-concept thriller has the potential to self-destruct, especially when it dives into totally implausible territory during its final stretch. But genre specialist Brad Anderson (Session 9, The Machinist, Transsiberian) gives it a taut, low-budget energy that keeps it pulsing throughout its entire running time. It helps that both Halle Berry and Abigail Breslin give tense, emotionally raw performances, inviting the viewer to care about their characters. read more...
