    Three Christs (2020)

Based on a 1964 case study, Three Christs isn't the most dynamic idea for a movie; it mainly involves using fictitious letters as a form of psychological treatment, it has no real slam-bang conclusion, and it goes on too long to be really successful, but the setup at least allows for a bunch of fine actors to really chew the scenery during group therapy sessions. Richard Gere plays Dr. Stone, who doesn't believe in the electroshock therapy used at the time. When he is presented with three different patients who all believe that they are Jesus Christ, he comes up with an idea to put them together in their own private session, hoping that their confronting one another will lead to a breakthrough. They are Joseph (Peter Dinklage), Leon (Walton Goggins), and Clyde (Bradley Whitford), each with slightly different variations on their stories. Charlotte Hope has a tricky role as Becky, Dr. Stone's extremely pretty research assistant who sits in on the sessions, creating and enduring strong sexual tensions. Kevin Pollak, Stephen Root, Jane Alexander, Julianna Margulies, and James Monroe Iglehart co-star, some of whom provide the much-needed disbelief of Dr. Stone's methods in an attempt to ramp up the tension. The movie premiered at the 2017 Toronto Film Festival and sat on the shelf for over two years before release. Director Jon Avnet is a longtime veteran who previously worked with both Gere and Whitford on Red Corner (1997). read more...

      A Coffee in Berlin (2014)

I'm so glad people are making black-and-white movies again. Last year, I reviewed four new black-and-white movies, and three of them made my year's ten best list (the fourth was a runner-up). Black-and-white has a whole different feel from color; it can make things seem darker, scarier, more romantic, more profound, more timeless. I wanted to see A Coffee in Berlin, I admit, partly because of the black-and-white. Yet no cinematography can make a good film great. A Coffee in Berlin is only a good film, but it does have a very good ending. read more...

        To Sleep with Anger (1990)

I was lucky enough to see Charles Burnett's To Sleep with Anger during its all-too-brief 1990 theatrical release. I loved it then, and my memory of that time is frosted with Burnett coming to my college to speak (I attended with only a handful of other students), and my first and only meeting with Danny Glover (he was very friendly and gave me an autograph). But I never took any notes on the film and as the years passed and I wanted to write up a review, I found my memory of it a little too faded. Worse, it had become something of a lost film, never released on DVD and quite difficult to find. Now, in what will surely be one of the most essential Blu-rays of the year, the Criterion Collection has finally righted this wrong. read more...

          Ginger & Fred (1986)

Federico Fellini's career can almost be traced across a line chart. When he began, he partially kept to his Neo-Realism roots (Variety Lights, The White Sheik, etc.). Soon after, he abandoned them for less realistic, more dreamlike films like La Dolce Vita (1960) and 8 1/2 (1963) before dissolving completely into phantasmagoric excess (Juliet of the Spirits, Satyricon). But at some point after that, as he approached retirement age, he merged into a more wistful approach, half-nostalgic and half-fantastical. These later films don't enjoy the reputation of Fellini's earlier works, but then again, few films made by senior citizens do. read more...

            Searching for Ingmar Bergman (2018)

If you love cinema, then you must love Ingmar Bergman, and this documentary will justify your love. If you're new to cinema, or don't yet know (or don't like) Bergman, then maybe this documentary will help you get over that. As one interviewee states, Bergman's films can seem daunting, full of misery and depression; and sometimes that's true (let's be honest here... he was great, but he still had his lame ducks). But actually watching his films, the good ones, is a different experience. They're absorbing, transfixing. read more...
