Where to Invade Next (2016)

By now we know that Michael Moore is far from an objective maker of documentaries; his films always have their own slant, but despite that, it's hard to refute some of the good ideas in this movie. "Socialism" may be a dirty word here in the U.S.A., but Moore demonstrates that it's merely about sharing. As hard workers, we ought to get out of the system as much as we put in, and that we would do better as a helping community than as struggling individuals. read more...

Los Angeles Plays Itself (2004)

As bad a year in film as 2005 has been, there are at least half a dozen movies currently playing for which I would recommend paying full price: A History of Violence, Capote, Good Night, and Good Luck, Broken Flowers, 2046, possibly Corpse Bride and certainly the new film opening today at the Roxie, Los Angeles Plays Itself. read more...

Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror (2019)

George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead (1968) is rightly seen as a breakthrough, with its Black hero, followed by early horror films by Black directors, William Crain's Blacula (1972) and Bill Gunn's Ganja & Hess (1973). (Crain is interviewed here.) Ken Foree and Keith David talk about their roles in Dawn of the Dead (1974) and The Thing (1982), respectively, while the role played by Scatman Crothers in The Shining (1980) is seen as something of a setback. Actors cast as sidekicks and victims in various 1980s slasher films discuss the upsides, and downsides, of their work. Things change little by little as Tony Todd became the lead villain in Candyman (1992), and Black characters become more prominent in Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight (1995) and Tales from the Hood (1995). read more...
