Sabrina (1954)

Sabrina is something of a conundrum for me. It's not a totally successful movie by any means. Writer-director Billy Wilder was unable to reasonably solve the love triangle between Hepburn and her two much older suitors (Humphrey Bogart and William Holden), neither of which was any prize to begin with. Yet, it's a perfect Audrey Hepburn vehicle, with her role as a chauffeur's daughter living over the garage of a huge mansion, and dreamily gazing at its opulent backyard parties. She knows -- and we know -- that she really belongs in one of them, twirling away in some fantastic dress. She sends the customers away with a warm, satisfied feeling. read more...

For Love of the Game (1999)

I love Sam Raimi and I love baseball, but I was surprised to discover that Raimi's For Love of the Game (1999) is more of a weepy melodrama than a sports film, more "love" than "game." Kevin Costner stars as veteran Detroit Tigers pitcher Billy Chapel, now forty and considering the news that owner Gary Wheeler (Brian Cox) is selling the team; Billy's contract will likely not be renewed under the new owners, so perhaps it's time to retire? At the same time, his girlfriend Jane (Kelly Preston) stood him up for a date and has informed him that she's moving away. So the story is centered on the mound, in a game against the Yankees, while Billy ponders all this. He flashes back to his first meeting with Jane, their growing relationship, meeting her daughter (a striking young Jena Malone), and his own celebrity. Slowly, over the course of several innings, it becomes apparent that Billy is pitching a perfect game. For baseball fans, this stuff is exciting, especially given Billy's special relationship with sad-sack catcher Gus Sinski (John C. Reilly); he talks to himself and chooses each pitch as if it were an epic poem. But this is a long film (2 hours and 18 minutes), and most of it is dedicated to the goopy relationship stuff, which is absolutely routine and static, showing nothing of Raimi's usually kinetic style of filmmaking. Even a career-threatening accident — Billy getting his pitching hand caught in a bandsaw! — is tastefully sidestepped. (Only a small role by Raimi's brother Ted indicates that he's behind the camera at all.) Yet as it finished up, I found that the movie crossed home plate and won me over. Legendary Dodgers announcer Vin Scully appears as himself. read more...

Chinese Puzzle (2014)

Cedric Klapish's Chinese Puzzle completes a trilogy begun by L'Auberge Espagnole (2002) and Russian Dolls (2005), capturing the lives of several friends and lovers from their days as students to their days as parents. As a whole, the series isn't as profound as Richard Linklater's Before... trilogy or Michael Apted's Up documentaries, but it does have a lovely, infectious lightness of touch. It probably has more moments of silly, enjoyable fun than the rest of those more profound works put together. read more...

Star Trek: Nemesis (2002)

Star Trek fans know the secret code: even-numbered movies are good and odd-numbered movies are bad. Some fans will argue that Star Trek: The Motion Picture holds up extremely well as a surprisingly thoughtful and imaginative film, or that Star Trek III: The Search for Spock is inseparable from the beloved Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. But overall, the code holds true. Indeed, the new film and number 10 in the series, Star Trek: Nemesis, far surpasses its predecessor, the incredibly stupid Star Trek: Insurrection. On the other hand, the new film also bucks the code with its oddly unengaging presentation. read more...

Finding Your Feet (2018)

Another attempt at a sweet working-class English comedy in the vein of The Full Monty, this one isn't very funny, it's far too maudlin, far too long, and even the choppy dancing scenes fail to satisfy. read more...
