    Experimenter (2015)

Filmmaker Michael Almereyda tells the story of psychologist Stanley Milgram (Peter Sarsgaard), who, in the 1960s, invented a startling experiment. Subjects are asked to read questions to another subject, and punish them with electric shocks when they answer wrong. It's quickly revealed that the person receiving the shocks is part of the experiment, and the real test is whether the subject will buck authority and stop administering the shocks. Amazingly, very few people did; they just kept on giving shocks, even though they knew it was wrong and their very physical reactions showed they were against it. They simply could not disrespect authority. Almereyda does a wonderful job of re-creating the period, and also uses many of his own experimental techniques, such as artificial sets and fourth wall-breaking, but eventually the movie wears thin. Milgram is shown in the years following his breakthrough experiment, defending it to people who disbelieve and trying new experiments that never reach its power. Many fascinating actors signed up for this, some appearing in tiny roles. Winona Ryder has a fairly big part as Milgram's wife, but doesn't get to do much. read more...

    Henri-Georges Clouzot's Inferno (2009)

This documentary made its U.S. premiere at the 2009 New York Film Festival, made some festival and arthouse rounds in 2010, and finally had a San Francisco opening in 2011. It began, ostensibly, when film archivist Serge Bromberg found himself stuck in an elevator with Henri-Georges Clouzot's widow, and she told him about the late director's ordeal shooting L'Enfer (Inferno, or Hell) in the mid-1960s. The new documentary unveils lots of amazing-looking footage for the first time, as well as interviewing some of the surviving players. read more...

      Happiness (1998)

Writer/director Todd Solondz may be one of the most disturbed individuals out there. Thank God he's making movies instead of obscene phone calls. His 1996 critical hit Welcome to the Dollhouse was a direct channeling of adolescent fears, anguish, and pain. Solondz goes even farther in his new movie, Happiness. The movie shows us a family: three grown sisters, a mother, and a father, and their lives together and apart from each other. read more...

In Pickpocket, a young man believes himself above and beyond ordinary men and so justifies his actions as a pickpocket. Bresson of course shows us the details and rituals behind pickpocketing, while the hero wrestles with a Dostoyevskian conflict; does he really want to be caught? The final moment, during which the hero discovers the love of the devoted girl while behind bars, inspired Paul Schrader to pay homage with his American Gigolo. read more...
