Kick-Ass 2 (2013)

Three years ago, Matthew Vaughn's crazy, wild Kick-Ass was a shocker. But a shock doesn't last long, and no sequel could ever hope to duplicate its impact. read more...

Kick Ass (2010)

Simply put, Kick-Ass is a lot of fun, but only for mature viewers and older teens. The skilled, confident Hit Girl is a disturbing character, both admirable and pathetic. She's strong but often cruel and ruthless, and the movie raises several questions about her age. Is she cool, and a great role model, or has she been cheated out of a normal childhood and forced to grow up too quickly? read more...

The Toxic Avenger (1984)

Lloyd Kaufman and Troma Entertainment had their breakthrough film and their all-time high point with this willfully stupid superhero spoof, timed to ridicule some of the 1980s most popular tropes, i.e. nuclear waste, health clubs, drug dealers, etc. A ridiculous nerd, Melvin (Mark Torgl), gets tossed into a vat of nuclear waste and becomes the super-strong superhero The Toxic Avenger (Mitch Cohen), so hideously ugly that only a blind woman (Andree Maranda) will have him. The movie is cheerfully, unrelentingly over-the-top, filled with disgusting gore, language, and sex, with nothing deemed too awful or offensive for the final cut. Kaufman kept up this tactic for dozens of other Troma films, and it could get extremely tiresome, but at this one moment, it was just what we needed. read more...

Darkman (1990)

Upon its initial release, Darkman was frequently compared to Dick Tracy and Batman, mainly because of the similar, highly artificial comic book-look, as well as similar musical scores by Danny Elfman on all three films. Now that the smoke has cleared, and Hollywood has moved onto other trends, we have Darkman, clear and plain and bright as day (or dark as night). It deserves a second look. read more...

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992)

The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie never got even a nibble of the love that the TV series had -- perhaps because its spoofy comedy didn't hit as hard as the moody emotions of the show -- but it has its own weird, "B" movie charms. (The whole comic idea behind the title, originally, was the juxtaposition between the brain-dead cheerleader image and the slayer's vicious skill.) Kristy Swanson was the original Buffy, with Donald Sutherland as her "trainer," Luke Perry as her potential beau, Rutger Hauer as the bad bloodsucker and Paul Reubens as his Renfield-like underling. It has some pretty funny, early-90s-era dialogue, but the scene that keeps me laughing is Reubens' extended, exaggerated death scene. It's like something out of some dark, lost episode of "Pee-wee's Playhouse." Hilary Swank makes her movie debut. Joss Whedon scripted, and Fran Rubel Kuzui directed. read more...
