Time Regained (1999)

A few weeks ago, I wrote about a movie called Sunshine that ran three hours and was too overly simplified. Now we have a movie called Time Regained that runs three hours and is too overly complicated. Though if I had a choice of which one to see again, it would be Time Regained, without hesitation. Even though I was almost always completely in the dark, this new film by director Raul Ruiz is inventive and astounding in ways I've never seen before. read more...

The Strange Case of Angelica (2010)

The Portuguese director Manoel de Oliveira, who is 102 years old as of this writing and the only living director to have begun his career in the silent era, never ceases to surprise me. His films are usually described as "talky" and "static," and lately they have evolved into shorter pieces with fewer characters and fewer camera setups. But here comes The Strange Case of Angelica, which may be the most accessible of the ten Oliveira films I've seen so far. It contains many more purely visual scenes with no dialogue, more camera setups, passionate (doomed) romance, and even some visual effects. Along with his previous film Eccentricities of a Blond Hair Girl, it's more streamlined. He proves that, even after a century, there are still things to be learned. read more...

    Certified Copy (2011)

After a decade's worth of experiments with video (Ten, Five Dedicated to Ozu, Shirin, etc.), the great Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami returns to the commercial fold, and this time with a genuine international movie star, Juliette Binoche, helping out (she also appeared briefly in Shirin). Theoretically, this could be Kiarostami's "selling out" or else his most accessible movie to date, but instead it's one of his most deliriously puzzling. Most viewers -- especially those that demand answers from their movies -- will walk away not knowing what to make of it. But if you allow more than one possibility to this scenario, it emerges as a masterpiece, and Kiarostami's best film since The Wind Will Carry Us (1999). read more...

    The Endless (2018)

The chilling, mysterious The Endless (2017) is a true low-budget discovery, with enough ideas and surprises for many movies. Co-directed by Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson, and written by Benson, the movie introduces two brothers, Aaron and Justin (played by the filmmakers), who were raised in a commune, but escaped. Justin, the eldest, believes that it was run by an evil cult and that they're better off where they are, living in civilization and eating cups-o-noodles. But Aaron remembers all of it fondly, and misses it. When they receive a strange videotape indicating that their former friends are still alive, Aaron wants to visit. Justin warily agrees, and as the visit becomes longer and longer, the brothers discover many weird, disturbing secrets, and even more questions, such as: what's the reason behind the double moons? Moorhead and Benson get multitudes from their cast, their effortless FX, and simple locations, and it will surely leave heads spinning. read more...

      Safe (1995)

Safe is an American masterpiece depicting an average housewife (Julianne Moore, in a great perforamance) who develops an allergy to all kinds of everyday chemicals and must be shuttled out to a New Mexico detox camp. Writer/director Todd Haynes treats the material with a subtle touch, allowing the horror of the situation to creep through and playing on the cult-like behavior of the cure-all compound. Though the film had a miniscule budget, it looks outstanding with its dull, muted colors and godawful lite-rock soundtrack. It was voted in the Village Voice's poll as the best picture of the 1990s, and with good reason. read more...
