Mandy (2018)

From the son of the director of Rambo: First Blood Part II comes this unbelievably bizarre, disturbing revenge film, slowed down and stretched out like a fever dream. The film is often decorated with gauzy shimmers, scratches of light, that stretch across the screen as if we were indeed half asleep. The plot of Mandy is simple enough to describe. It's 1983, and lumberjack Red Miller (Nicolas Cage) and his beloved Mandy (Andrea Riseborough) live in a remote cabin in the woods. While Red works, Mandy loves to read paperback sci-fi novels and draw. One day, the leader of a sinister religious cult, Jeremiah Sand (Linus Roache), spots Mandy and decides to take her. Red is tied up with barbed wire and forced to watch as she is tortured beyond belief. Then, he visits his pal Caruthers (Bill Duke), grabs his trusty crossbow, forges a kind of futuristic steel axelike weapon, and hits the road to find and kill every last one of the bastards. What's shocking is that director Panos Cosmatos doesn't milk any of this for thrills or tension. Paced a little like a David Lynch or Stanley Kubrick picture, it's all about creating a mood, a visualization of such darkness and evil that it can only recall the most disturbing movies of the grindhouse era (Wes Craven's The Last House on the Left comes to mind). read more...

Videodrome (1983)

Released in 1983, David Cronenberg's Videodrome now seems, with hindsight, one of his best and most prophetic films. A small-time cable channel programmer, Max Renn (James Woods) is a kind of sleaze merchant who plays porn on the airwaves. He's on the lookout for the next big thing, and he thinks he finds it in a program called "Videodrome," that features realistic whipping and torture. It turns out that the show doesn't exist and the tape that Max watched actually sends out a signal that causes brain tumors and hallucinations. read more...

Goodnight Mommy (2015)

To put it politely, Goodnight Mommy is on messed up movie. Halfway between a horror film and a psychological thriller, it was somehow Austria's official submission to the Best Foreign Language Film category at this year's Oscars, but did not receive a nomination. In any case, the National Board of Review chose it as one of the year's top 5 imports. It concerns ten year-old identical twins Elias and Lukas (Elias and Lukas Schwarz), whose mother (Susanne Wuest) returns home after some kind of facial reconstruction surgery. Her head is in bandages, and after she exhibits some strange behavior, the boys decide that she isn't really their mother, but, rather, some kind of impostor. They desperately want her to prove herself, but all the evidence she submits is alarmingly ambiguous. Eventually the boys resort to drastic measures (and I mean drastic). The movie has a mind-twisting climax that will have you wanting to go back and check again to make sure you saw it right. However, animal lovers are warned to think twice before proceeding. The writing/directing duo Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala make their feature filmmaking debut with this. read more...

Enemy (2014)

The Oscar-nominated Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve (Incendies) continues his collaboration with actor Jake Gyllenhaal, following last year's Prisoners. The result here is much tighter but far less realistic. Indeed, Enemy could easily be described as surreal. It's a mystery story, with mystery elements, but the movie does not provide much in the way of answers. It's more like a David Lynch film, with clues, emotions, images, ideas, and sensations coming together for one unique experience, with a bizarre, unforgettable ending. read more...
