    The Lion King (1994)

The Lion King is probably, without much doubt, the most popular and beloved of all Disney animated films. But I am not one of its biggest fans. Of the fifty or so Disney animated features, I'd rank it somewhere in the middle. I saw it only once, in 1994, and just now saw it a second time for its 2017 Blu-ray release (the "Circle of Life" edition). I'd agree that it's beautiful, and frankly, hard to dislike. But before I get going, let me explain. read more...

    Stuart Little (1999)

The Little family lives in an old-fashioned house in New York City. This is not Martin Scorsese's New York. It's more like Doris Day's New York, filmed in rich color that looks like the Technicolor of the 1950's. Stuart Little himself is voiced by Michael J. Fox, and our acceptance of the movie depends on whether or not we like him. I did. But besides that, Stuart Little is a slight movie with more charm than plot. read more...

      The BFG (2016)

Due to some scheduling conflicts, I came to Steven Spielberg's The BFG a bit late, after it was already on track to become one of the director's biggest flops. I can't understand why; it seems to me that it's one of his gentlest and most beautiful films, less frenetic than Hook, less grueling than E.T. the Extra-terrestrial and less wispy than War Horse. I can only guess that because The BFG comes from a book by the wicked, clever Roald Dahl, viewers have been miffed that Spielberg's movie is soft and touching instead. But I loved it. (Melissa Mathison, the screenwriter of E.T., re-teamed with Spielberg for this one, apparently completing it before her death in November of last year.) read more...

      Mulan (2020)

Truthfully, Disney's slate of live-action remakes of its older, animated properties is somewhat problematic. It's hard to disguise the fact that they are largely easy cash-grabs. And, disappointingly, the more personal, more experimental entries, like Tim Burton's Dumbo and David Lowery's Pete's Dragon — the ones I like best — have fared the most poorly of the bunch. The ones that stick closest to the originals, like faithful cover versions of beloved songs, seem to have pleased audiences far more. Perhaps they're just comfortable. read more...

      Gulliver's Travels (1939)

In many ways Max and Dave Fleischer trumped Walt Disney in the field of animation. Their early "Out of the Inkwell" cartoons (with Koko the Clown) were far ahead of anything Disney was doing at the time. And the Fleischers' Betty Boop cartoons were more daring and surreal than the early Mickey Mouse cartoons of the 1930s. By the time Disney got around to shooting cartoons in color with new levels of depth and realism in The Old Mill (1937), the Fleischers had beat him to it by a year with their exemplary Popeye the Sailor Meets Sinbad the Sailor (1936). read more...
