    Trolls World Tour (2020)

To be clear, I haven't seen Trolls (2016), which told the story of the cheerful Poppy (voiced by Anna Kendrick) and the grumpy Branch (voiced by Justin Timberlake) and a road trip they took to save the Troll community. Now, in the world of COVID-19, the sequel, Trolls World Tour, was released video-on-demand so that people sheltering at home could have the benefit of seeing it on the same day it was intended to be released in theaters. I can say for sure that this decision was a good one. Not only is Trolls World Tour a fun, colorful movie for families and kids, but it's also a perfect movie for our severely divided world. read more...

      Arthur and the Invisibles (2007)

Luc Besson's new Arthur and the Invisibles succeeds because it has the nerve to show up half-assed, like a misshapen factory reject. Unlike the soulless, professionally polished CGI-animated kids' movies that dominated 2006 (Over the Hedge, The Ant Bully, Cars, Barnyard, Flushed Away), it has the feel of human handprints on it, as if actual people made it. read more...

The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949)

The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad was made at a time when Walt Disney's initial ambitions had been dashed by WWII, finances, and various other factors and was forced to cut back on the massive resources he had used on his original five masterpieces (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo, and Bambi). The animation here is not quite as smooth, not quite as rich, and has a general lack of depth. In the first, J. Thaddeus Toad, Esq. is a sucker for new fads and becomes taken with a new invention, the motor car (it's based on a children's novel published in 1908). In the second, new schoolteacher Ichabod Crane tries to woo the beautiful Katrina van Tassel, but his rival Brom Bones scares him off with a tale of the "Legend of Sleepy Hollow," the Headless Horseman. read more...

          Stuart Little (1999)

The Little family lives in an old-fashioned house in New York City. This is not Martin Scorsese's New York. It's more like Doris Day's New York, filmed in rich color that looks like the Technicolor of the 1950's. Stuart Little himself is voiced by Michael J. Fox, and our acceptance of the movie depends on whether or not we like him. I did. But besides that, Stuart Little is a slight movie with more charm than plot. read more...

            Melody Time (1948)

This was another anthology film put together by Walt Disney while his company was struggling because of WWII and other factors. It's no Fantasia, but it's far lovelier and more coherent than its predecessor Fun and Fancy Free. It contains seven stories, some of them so slight they're like sonnets, or dandelion tufts flying away in the breeze. First is Once Upon a Wintertime, following a couple of young lovers as they frolic on a frozen lake (accompanied by a pair of rabbits). Bumble Boogie is amazing, perhaps good enough to have been in Fantasia if it weren't so fleetingly short. Third is the familiar The Legend Johnny Appleseed, followed by Little Toot, the story of a tugboat narrated (and sung) by the Andrews Sisters. Trees is based on Joyce Kilmer's poem, and is a lovely impressionistic piece. Blame It on the Samba features Donald Duck and José Carioca, being cheered up by rhythm and dancing. Finally, there's the longest one, the tall tale of Pecos Bill, narrated by Roy Rogers, which is loony fun, but perhaps might have been better placed somewhere in the middle. (Apparently, images of Pecos Bill smoking have been restored on the streaming service Disney+ but have been edited out of all video releases.) Next up from Disney was one more combo film, The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, and then Cinderella finally put him back in the saddle. read more...
