    Dying of the Light (2014)

Filmmaker Paul Schrader, who wrote or co-wrote the screenplays for Taxi Driver and Raging Bull and directed American Gigolo, Affliction, and Auto Focus, seems to be struggling in today's movie industry. According to reports, his cut of Dying of the Light was taken from him, and this version is heavily edited, scored and mixed, without his approval. What remains is not exactly terrible, but it's also not particularly sharp or fresh, and not really worthy of a filmmaker of Schrader's reputation. read more...

        Shanghai (2015)

Written by the talented Hossein Amini and clearly inspired by spy and detective movies of the 1940s, this seems to have been a labor of love. But it's so convoluted that it eventually becomes lost. The cast is a great collection of international personalities, all of whom seem to fit right into the period clothing and setting, and they all move and speak with the appropriate rhythms. For a long time, it's easy to follow them, even as the plot becomes more complex. read more...

          The Unforgiven (1960)

Alan LeMay wrote a lot of screenplays and teleplays, but his biggest contribution to history was writing the novels The Searchers (1954) and The Unforgiven (1957). John Ford made a movie of the first one, in 1956, and it's generally regarded as one of the greatest American films ever made. John Huston made a movie of the second one, in 1960, and it's considerably less. read more...
