    Dirty Pretty Things (2003)

A groundswell of moviegoers has lately expressed their disdain toward the saucer-eyed French gamine Audrey Tautou. I imagine the same thing might have happened to her namesake Audrey Hepburn, who became a star and an Oscar-winner overnight after her first starring role in Roman Holiday (1953). Any meteoric rise will always be accompanied by disgruntled naysayers. read more...

      Hell or High Water (2016)

Opening Friday in Bay Area theaters, Hell or High Water is a great genre film. It's a film noir cannily combined with a Western, set in the modern day. read more...

The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020)

Aaron Sorkin's long, complex re-telling of the trial following the events of the 1968 Democratic National Convention (also depicted in Brett Morgen's documentary Chicago 10) is a surprisingly well-oiled machine. It moves slickly — and is even funny — as Sorkin's trademark machine-gun dialogue sings and dances us through the details. Sorkin may have changed some facts here and there, but it works like gangbusters as a dramatic movie. The gist is that newly-empowered Republicans want to make an example out of a group of peaceful, liberal protestors, and conjure up a huge trial based on ridiculous "crimes." Sacha Baron Cohen steals the show as the headline-grabber Abbie Hoffman, but the entire cast is excellent, riding high on Sorkin's screenplay and brisk direction (much sharper than his directorial debut Molly's Game). Frank Langella is especially strong as the sinister, malevolent Judge Julius Hoffman, while the treatment of Black Panther member Bobby Seale (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) is just as shocking as ever. read more...

        The Big Red One (1980)

In 1980, after thirty years directing movies, Samuel Fuller got to make what he hoped would be his masterpiece, based on his experiences in World War II with his unit, the "big red 1." Fuller's version was a nearly four-hour epic. Surely it would have been the culmination of all his work, and been his masterpiece -- the film he would be remembered by. It's not his masterpiece, but only because the studio chopped it down to 2 hours, added narration, and a new score that Fuller did not approve of. As it stands now, The Big Red One is one of many masterpieces, among his many cheaper B-movies that are just as good, The Steel Helmet, Pickup on South Street, Shock Corridor, and The Naked Kiss. read more...

          Trumbo (2015)

This biopic could have fallen into all the usual traps, but Jay Roach directs John McNamara's smart, witty screenplay with a light touch, and the finished movie is both entertaining and educational. Set between the 1940s and the 1960s, the movie could have been a mere collection of highlights, but the filmmakers manage to create a vivid gallery of colorful supporting characters that contribute equally; in the lead, Bryan Cranston is marvelous — with an endless flow of crystalline dialogue — but it's not just a one-man show. read more...
