Countdown (2019)

Despite a few mildly amusing scenes of comic relief, this horror movie otherwise offers little more than a pastiche of ideas borrowed from other horror movies, and a batch of flat, dull characters. read more...

Rawhead Rex (1986)

In the 1980s, Clive Barker changed the world of horror with the release of his masterful short story collections the Books of Blood. But the first movie based on one of those stories, Rawhead Rex (1986), didn't change anything. Although Barker himself is credited with the screenplay, he has distanced himself from the finished film and I can't blame him much. The original story is incredible, but actually showing the monster — a big guy in a suit with moving latex parts — onscreen was a mistake. The monster's monstrous inner thoughts from the story are reduced to eye-rolling in the film. read more...

Shut In (2016)

This shockingly empty thriller somehow attracted a great cast, but, while delivering some dumb jump-scares, it completely ignores the story's looming, daunting psychological, emotional ramifications. It's difficult to discuss the movie's biggest failures without giving away the plot, but let's just say that, when all is revealed, most audiences will simply shake their heads in disbelief, rather than clutching their seats in shock. read more...

To All a Goodnight (1980)

To All a Goodnight is a rotten, Christmas-set slasher film that's even worst than most of the movies in this subgenre. It takes place at a girls' finishing school, where several boys arrive for some holiday partying. A killer in a Santa Claus suit starts knocking off fornicating teens, one by one. A nerd learns how to be a man, and the shy, virginal girl (the lovely Jennifer Runyon) becomes the lead. There's a "surprise" twist. Made the same year as Friday the 13th, it has some of the same ideas, but poorly executed. Some of the dialogue scenes in this are either head-scratching or wince-inducing. The movie's big draw is that it was directed by David Hess, who played the evil Krug in Wes Craven's The Last House on the Left. The only other benefit is Ms. Runyon, who went onto bigger roles in Ghostbusters and The Falcon and the Snowman. read more...

Hush (2016)

Mike Flanagan's Hush premiered at South by Southwest in March of 2016, Netflix purchased the distribution rights, and less than a month later, it was released as a streaming movie. Salem-born Flanagan previously directed the excellent Oculus, which is, for my money, one of the best horror films of the past decade, and he has two others scheduled for release this year. Hush is of the familiar, self-explanatory "home invasion" subgenre, but with a few twists. One is that the lead character is deaf (almost unique, except that Michael Apted made a 1994 "home invasion" movie with a blind woman, called Blink). The other is that the masked invader eventually removes his mask, and the effect is unexpectedly chilling. read more...
