Ikiru (1952)

In the 1940s, America did not see Japanese films, for the very good reason that Japan was our enemy during WWII. But a few years later, in the early 1950s, an influx of masterworks began to trickle in, including Kenji Mizoguchi's Ugetsu, Yasujiro Ozu's Tokyo Story, and Kurosawa's Rashomon and Seven Samurai. Kurosawa was considered the most "Western" of these filmmakers, and his two films struck a nerve with Americans. The samurai must have seemed like cowboys, but in a new and exotic setting, not to mention the gorgeous and fluid visuals of those films, which brought action to a new level of art. read more...

Pilgrimage (1933)

Certain John Ford scholars consider Pilgrimage to be one of his best films, if not his best. But outside of John Ford's biggest fans, the film is not well known, perhaps because, at a glance, it's rather untypical of that great American filmmaker. First off, it's not a tough guy movie; it's actually a "women's picture," and it even focuses on a "lady of a certain age" rather than a young, beautiful starlet. That lady is Mrs. Hannah Jessop, played by the extraordinary Henrietta Crosman, who was best known for her stage work. Ford scholars agree that the director was fond of his "mother" characters in movies, but Mrs. Jessop is something different, showing the dark side of parenting. read more...

The Descendants (2011)

As for me, I loved Sideways, though I was even fonder of Million Dollar Baby, the movie that eventually edged ahead and won the Oscar for Best Picture. (And I liked Before Sunset better than both.) I don't think I look much like Paul Giamatti, and I'm not sure how much I identify with him. But all these qualifiers aside, Payne's new movie, his first in seven years, isn't nearly as good. read more...

The Help (2011)

I just caught up with The Help, after it earned $169 million at the American box office, and scored four Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. It's also the thirteenth highest grossing movie of the year, and the #1 movie of the year that's not a sequel, prequel, remake or franchise of some kind. Here are some quick thoughts. read more...

Down in the Delta (1998)

It's hard to imagine poet/actress/author Maya Angelou, on top of all her many other achievements, saying, "you know, what I really want to do is direct." Yet direct she does, and makes a fine job of it with Down in the Delta, starring Alfre Woodard and Wesley Snipes. At first glance, Down in the Delta may seem like a TV-disease-of-the-week movie and I was not thrilled about having to see it. But, sitting there in the dark, I became tremendously moved by the movie, and I have not forgotten its power. read more...
