    Pan's Labyrinth (2006)

The Mexican-born director Guillermo Del Toro always makes exciting, curious blends of horror and fairy tales, and, like Terry Gilliam and Tim Burton, often draws inspiration from the childlike. He has quickly established a singular visual style, filled with underground caverns and images of gears and clockwork, and he has shown an ability to jump back and forth between personal projects (Cronos, The Devil's Backbone) and Hollywood movies (Blade II, Hellboy) without compromise. His newest film, Pan's Labyrinth, is arguably his most accomplished to date. read more...

    Boudu Saved from Drowning (1932)

With Boudu Saved from Drowning (1932), Jean Renoir managed to take a rather silly old play and turned it into a work of art. His secret weapon was the amazing Michel Simon (also in Renoir's La Chienne) in the title role, a shaggy tramp who decides to jump off a bridge and end his life after his dog runs off. (He appeals to a policeman for help in finding the dog, but is given the brush-off; immediately following a wealthy lady asks for help finding her dog, and the cop is only too happy to help.) On the bridge, a crowd gathers, seemingly having a good time watching the tramp's potential suicide. But a bookseller, Edouard Lestingois (Charles Granval), spots him and dives into the Seine to save him. Edouard invites Boudu to stay in his stately home, where he behaves mostly like an animal, seducing both Edouard's wife (Marcelle Hainia), but also the housemaid (Sévérine Lerczinska), the latter of whom had been embarking upon an affair with Edouard. The big, lopsided Boudu, with his mound of facial hair, has little regard for anything, including the beautiful antique books on the premises. But the key is that he's not vindictive; rather, it simply never occurred to him to think that way. The play's plot mechanics kick in when Boudu wins a lottery and is coerced into marrying the housemaid, but Renoir keeps it all beautifully, humorously on track. read more...

      The Caveman's Valentine (2001)

In one of his finest performances, Samuel L. Jackson howls and stomps his way through this new film by director Kasi Lemmons, her follow-up to the great Eve's Bayou (1997). Jackson plays the "Caveman," a.k.a. Romulus Ledbetter, a former classically-trained concert pianist now turned crazy homeless guy who lives in a cave in Central Park (he gets messages from Moth Seraphs in his head). When he finds the frozen corpse of a friend in a nearby tree, Romulus takes on the case, doing some pretty slick detective work for a crazy guy. The script, adapted by George Dawes Green from his own book, asks us to suspend quite a lot in the way of logic, but Lemmons brings a lovely "magical realism" to the film and we're carried away. Anthony Michael Hall and Ann Magnuson also star. read more...

Better Call Saul: Season Two (2016)

There's no reason this show should have been as good as it is. A spinoff from the greatest TV show of all time, Breaking Bad? It sounds like a terrible idea. But it was always intriguing, given that creator Vince Gilligan (also a writer on The X-Files) was behind it. And, indeed, as soon as Better Call Saul started in 2015, it was instantly its own entity, alive and amazing in its own way. read more...

André Gregory & Wallace Shawn: 3 Films (2015)

The Criterion Collection released this remarkable box set of three films, spanning several decades, each featuring the writers and actors Wallace Shawn and Andre Gregory at their finest. Directed by Louis Malle, My Dinner with Andre (1981) was a landmark movie of its time, and is still remarkable to witness. In many ways, the follow-up, Malle's final film, Vanya on 42nd Street (1994) was even better. (See my separate reviews of both films for more details.) The third film, A Master Builder (2013), came nearly 20 years later, with Jonathan Demme taking over for the late Malle. read more...
