In Jackson Heights (2015)

Frederick Wiseman (Boxing Gym, At Berkeley, National Gallery) returns with another of his singular documentaries. As with his other films, In Jackson Heights employs his unique fly-on-the-wall technique, wherein he somehow gets his camera close to people, to record their natural actions and reactions, without them seeming to notice or care. It feels like we're actually visiting. Jackson Heights is a neighborhood in Queens, NY, which boasts the largest melting pot in the world. Apparently some 167 languages are spoken in this one area. We meet some of these cultures and view them at work, and we see much preparation of delicious-looking food. We hear from gay groups and Latino immigrants, and we sit in on some classes. We also sit in on some neighborhood meetings because, of course, rich white people have begun to notice the neighborhood -- it's a quick train ride into Manhattan -- and have begun to attempt buying it up and gentrifying it. In one horrifying speech, a neighborhood man explains just how they do this, and folks wind up with no choice left but to sell. But despite the threat of losing everything, we see that the locals are strong, kind, wise people who have found a kind of harmony. (See Wiseman's official page for more info.) read more...

Finding Vivian Maier (2014)

First off, there are the photographs. Even if you're an amateur shutterbug, it's clear that the photos are masterworks. As others have accurately described, they have a certain joy, pain, openness, and curiosity that should have made the photographer a star. But she died totally unknown. read more...

Grizzly Man (2005)

Werner Herzog's mad quest for truth of vision has over the years perfectly adapted itself from his insane jungle epics with Klaus Kinski to the documentary format. This year, three Herzog documentaries have opened: The White Diamond, about the attempt to fly an experimental airship over a waterfall, Wheel of Time, about the Dalai Lama and an annual Buddhist gathering, and this one, about Timothy Treadwell and his efforts to study and protect Alaskan grizzly bears. read more...

Into the Inferno (2016)

What I love about Werner Herzog's films is that they have a genuine sense of curiosity. They are open to veer off track, to forget the original plan. They wander wherever the story takes them, following the most interesting thread. Herzog's newest documentary Into the Inferno (2016) — a Netflix original — began more or less on the heels of his Oscar-nominated doc Encounters at the End of the World (2007), on which he met volcanologist Clive Oppenheimer. Now he meets up with Dr. Oppenheimer again for a film that is, ostensibly, about volcanos. But, of course, it detours into several other fascinating ideas. read more...

Let There Be Light (1946)

Olive Films has released an essential Blu-ray, collecting all four of John Huston's wartime documentaries on one disc. These are: the relatively innocuous recruiting film Winning Your Wings (1942), featuring James Stewart; The Oscar-nominated Report from the Aleutians (1943), featuring (staged) battle footage, as well as footage of a bombing; San Pietro (1945), about a battle in a small village in Italy; and the powerful Let There Be Light (1946). That last one was an early example of how emotional stress in wartime can be just as incapacitating as physical injuries, but the military banned it, and it went unseen for decades. read more...
