The Eiger Sanction (1975)

Clint Eastwood's mountain-climbing spy thriller is surprisingly effective, even by today's standards. Eastwood plays Dr. Jonathan Hemlock, a retired assassin and mountain climber, and current art collector. His former boss, the sinister albino "Dragon" (Thayer David), convinces him to perform one last job, one last "sanction," a murder to avenge one of Hemlock's old friends. That leads to a second job, which requires Hemlock to climb one more miserable mountain to kill his quarry. He re-connects with his old mountain-climbing trainer Ben Bowman (George Kennedy) for a crash course, and a lady spy, Jemima (Vonetta McGee) piques his interest as well. Of course, enemy spies try to kill him at every turn. But the mountain-climbing footage is truly gripping. There are some troublesome gay stereotypes, but easily forgiven considering the era. And though the film goes on a bit long, Eastwood does a brilliant job of doling out information and balancing the suspense. The scenes of Dragon's temperature and light-controlled lair are especially striking. This is an underrated, high-water mark for the great director. read more...

Extraction (2020)

Debuting on Netflix, "Extraction" is like a vintage 1980s action film, about a hero who is "the only man for the job." Chris Hemsworth takes on the role of, "Tyler Rake," that might once have been played by Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Van Damme, or any of the other stars that regularly hit the gym. After a flash-forward to one of the more exciting shoot-em-up scenes to start things off, and after a character set-up sequence wherein Tyler jumps off a huge cliff, splashes into the water, and sits, cross-legged and zenlike at the lake's bottom, he is hired to retrieve the kidnapped son (Rudhraksh Jaiswal) of a Mumbai drug lord. Everything goes fine, until the first drop point is compromised, and Tyler must go on the run with the boy, evading much gunfire. Golshifteh Farahani (Paterson) co-stars as Tyler's colleague who gives him directions on his earpiece, and David Harbour appears as Tyler's old friend who briefly gives him safe haven. read more...

Robin Hood (1922)

After his hit swashbucklers The Mark of Zorro (1920) and The Three Musketeers (1921), actor/producer Douglas Fairbanks had enough clout to put together the most expensive movie of its time, Robin Hood (1922), (though Erich von Stroheim may have spent just as much on his Foolish Wives the same year). It's by far the best and most joyous Robin Hood movie ever made; beside Fairbanks, even Errol Flynn appears to be standing still. This Robin Hood even explains why, if Robin Hood is such a sterling fighter, didn't he go off to fight in the Crusades with King Richard? Director Allan Dwan had worked with Fairbanks on several two-reelers, and would go on to direct his last silent film, The Iron Mask (1929). Dwan would continue working, making "B" pictures up until the 1960s, and finishing up with something like 500 films on his resume before he died. But Robin Hood is arguably his masterpiece. read more...

The Indian Fighter (1955)

The eyepatch-wearing, Hungarian-born director Andre de Toth was known as a maker of "B" pictures, but he somehow won the job of directing The Indian Fighter in full color and Cinemascope, and the first movie from Kirk Douglas's own production company. And he did not disappoint. He used the wide frame to showcase his unique way of depicting violence; it appears from anywhere, including offscreen. The resulting movie is brisk and rousing, if morally complex. read more...
