    Miles Ahead (2016)

Don Cheadle has been working on his Miles Davis movie for years now (I interviewed him in 2008 and he was working on it then), and the film that finally emerges seems to have been a tad compromised. It doesn't really even seem to have much of a story to tell. But it's so structurally and rhythmically free-flowing -- so jazzy -- that I think it's still worth a look. read more...

      The Great Silence (1968)

An outstanding Spaghetti Western from Sergio Corbucci, the director of Django, previously unreleased in this country. Jean-Louis Trintignant and Klaus Kinski co-star as good and evil bounty hunters. To keep from being arrested, neither will ever draw first. Things get complicated when a beautiful widow hires Trintignant to kill Kinski. Corbucci uses the same wide-open spaces as his colleague Sergio Leone, but goes much deeper under the surface, using snow and bitter cold to beautiful advantage. Ennio Morricone provides an excellent score. Dubbed in English. (Fantoma's DVD features an essay and a video introduction by Alex Cox and the alternate "happy" ending.) read more...

        Slow West (2015)

Writer/director John Maclean — a musician and former member of The Beta Band — makes a noteworthy feature debut with this Western. Slow West definitely revels in the glories of the genre, and its frame is filled with beautifully composed shots, graceful movements, masterful uses of color, light and dark; and striking images of man at odds with his environment. read more...

The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada (2005)

The more I think about this Western directed by Tommy Lee Jones, the more I like it. It's a clear homage to existential, masculine films like Sam Peckinpah's Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974) and Monte Hellman's The Shooting (1966). And though it lacks the grungy, poetic grace of those films, it has its own unique, rugged atmosphere. read more...

            Inherent Vice (2014)

It is now widely accepted that Paul Thomas Anderson is a genius, one of the greatest living filmmakers, and perhaps in a league with even someone like Welles or Kubrick. So when Anderson drops something like The Master on us, it causes a response along the lines of "I have no idea what this is, but it must be great." I more or less did that in my review as well. Now comes Inherent Vice, and it's a little less opaque, a little more transparent, and it's starting to look more like a bad movie than a mysterious, confounding great one. read more...
