The Night (2021)

The first US-produced film to receive distribution in Iran in four decades, Kourosh Ahari's The Night is also one of the very best horror movies I've seen in recent years, rich in atmosphere and clever storytelling. It's a simple haunted-hotel setup as bickering Iranian-American couple Babak (Shahab Hosseini, from the dual Oscar-winners A Separation and The Salesman) and Neda (Niousha Noor) attend a dinner party with friends. They are stressed-out new parents, and Babak is suffering a toothache and has drunk too much when he insists that they head home for the night. The GPS sends them to a weird hotel complete with a creepy desk clerk (George Maguire). Of course, all kinds of crazy stuff begins happening, from scary noises to threatening figures. read more...

Blood Quantum (2020)

Whenever I start to think the zombie subgenre of horror has completely played itself out, someone actually comes up with another great idea. This time it's Jeff Barnaby's Blood Quantum, a clever, serious effort that seems to draw inspiration from George A. Romero's original films, in that it uses its outbreak to suggest other social issues just under the surface. The basic, brilliant idea here is that indigenous people are immune to the latest zombie infection, though this condition brings the characters very little peace. (The movie premieres April 28, 2020 on Shudder.) read more...

Pulse (2001)

One of the most interesting Japanese filmmakers working today, Kiyoshi Kurosawa -- no relation to Akira -- is also one of the worst distributed in this country. His masterpiece Cure, which established Kurosawa as one of the leading horror/thriller craftsmen, was made in 1997 and did not open in U.S. theaters until 2001. read more...

The Funeral Home (2021)

This haunted-funeral-home movie from Argentina isn't really very heavy on the scares, but it does cook up some pretty horrifying ideas that get stuck in the psyche. Bernardo (Luis Machín) runs a funeral home and, perhaps unwisely, also lives on the premises with his wife Estela (Celeste Gerez) and her daughter from a previous marriage, Irina (Camila Vaccarini). Ghosts from the funeral home invariably find their way into the dwelling. Bernardo's father, an emotionally abusive prankster prone to leaving the gas stove on, is one of them, and Bernardo has yet to finish his business with him. Estela is "haunted" by her abusive, late husband, who was so cruel to her she got her "tubes tied" to prevent him from getting her pregnant again. But Irina only has good memories of her father, and she hopes that she may get a "visit" from him. Unfortunately, a malevolent spirit has somehow joined the fun, and terrible things have begun happening. The Funeral Home avoids too many spooky FX, staying mostly with its characters in their strange environment, half life and half death, and winds up with a truly unexpectedly beautiful coda. read more...
