They Live by Night (1949)

Nicholas Ray's They Live by Night (1949) is one of the greatest debut features in movie history. Ray's extraordinary use of physical space as a representation of the characters' emotional state is already fully in place, as if he were born to moviemaking. Farley Granger plays Bowie, a young escaped convict accompanied by two veterans. When he's wounded, he's taken to a safe house where he meets and falls in love with Keechie (Cathy O'Donnell). Neither Bowie nor Keechie have much experience in the ways of romance, but they decide to run away together. Unfortunately, the gang presses Bowie into one last job, which goes horribly wrong and Bowie becomes a hot target. read more...

Paris Blues (1961)

One usually doesn't hear much about Paris Blues (1961) unless writers are talking about that elusive genre known as "jazz films." Frankly, the movie's two stars received much more attention the same year for two other films, Paul Newman in The Hustler and Sidney Poitier in A Raisin in the Sun. But Paris Blues is a film that seems happy noodling about, riding its highs and lows with equal fascination. read more...

God's Own Country (2017)

A feature writing and directing debut for Francis Lee, God's Own Country invites comparison to Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain, in that it tells the story of two young farm hands who become attracted to one another and act on that attraction while in a remote section of land, away from prying eyes. Whereas Ang Lee's film was beautiful and tentative, with several detours into subplots, Francis Lee's film is far grittier and more direct. read more...
