Ravenous (1999)

Ravenous is a terrifically well-made gory horror movie with splashes of humor. Robert Carlyle (The Full Monty) stars as a mysterious man who turns up at a California military outpost, circa 1850, and turns out to be a cannibal. Guy Pearce (L.A. Confidential), David Arquette (Scream), Jeffrey Jones (Amadeus), and Jeremy Davies (Saving Private Ryan) also star as American soldiers. Director Antonia Bird (Priest, Mad Love) keeps everything smart and balanced, and an amazing score by Michael Nyman (The Piano, Gattaca) -- reminiscent of 1970s-era Italian horror movies -- keeps us on our toes. This is not for the faint of heart; it may convert you into a vegetarian. read more...

Beyond Re-Animator (2003)

This perfunctory sequel, the third, and (so far) final in the Re-Animator series, takes place thirteen years after Bride of Re-Animator (1990). Dr. Herbert West (Jeffrey Combs) is serving time in jail for his crimes against humanity. A little kid from 1990 has now grown up to become Dr. Howard Phillips (Jason Barry). He has asked to be transferred to the prison's hospital, and requested to have West as his assistant. The idea is to begin work anew on West's glowing green re-animation formula. This time, however, West has developed a way to extract a living being's "essence" and inject it into one of his re-animated zombies, thereby giving the re-animated victim something like a "soul" (although West wouldn't call it that). read more...

Clown (2016)

While clowns are scary to many, filmmakers Christopher Ford and Jon Watts give the white-faced subject matter behind this loathsome horror movie only a cursory exploration; the result is not much fun. read more...

Prevenge (2017)

Filmed partly in Wales, this Shudder exclusive is enjoying a 2017 theatrical release, but subscribers can see it from the comfort of their couches. Not that this is a comforting movie, although it is frequently quite funny, in an extremely dark way. Actress Alice Lowe apparently conceived (no pun intended) the idea when she was pregnant, and ended up writing, directing, and starring in the final result, Prevenge. She plays Ruth, a very pregnant woman whose partner died in a mountain climbing accident; Lowe visually equates the red climbing ropes with blood-filled veins and umbilical cords, connections to life. Now, distraught, she visits a midwife that says her baby is in charge. So Ruth begins listening to her baby's sinister, high-pitched voice, as it urges her to kill. read more...

Stake Land (2011)

The press materials for Jim Mickle's Stake Land reference author Richard Matheson, but only insofar as it includes a kind of cross between vampires and zombies, as Matheson employed for his great novel I Am Legend. Otherwise, Stake Land starts off as a kind of very serious, dreary version of Zombieland. A naive teen (Connor Paolo) joins up with a grizzled hardass called "Mister" (Nick Damici, who co-wrote the script), who teaches the youngster how to kill the ravenous beasties. They keep traveling north, hoping to run into some kind of haven, and pick up the usual batch of misfits (including Top Gun's Kelly McGillis) along the way. It's all fairly typical. What sets this movie apart, however, is the appearance of a bizarre religious cult that could be more dangerous than the monsters. If only it had gone farther...
