Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck (2015)

I am a huge music nerd and Nirvana is perhaps my favorite band of all time. Like an earlier generation and JFK, I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when I learned that Kurt Cobain was dead, and it affected me deeply; like many others of my age, I had connected with his music in a profound way. (And, yes, I own an old CD of Bleach.) So it's not easy for me to watch a documentary like Brett Morgen's Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck lightly. But I will say that I liked what I saw. It made me appreciate Kurt's music and artistry anew. Morgen was given access to tons of intimate home movie footage -- so intimate that it shows Courtney Love naked -- and deals openly with Kurt's drug use, mainly as a way to kill his undiagnosed stomach pain. As with Morgen's Chicago 10, the filmmaker also uses animated sequences to flesh out Kurt's audio recordings. We see Kurt bristling at interviewers' questions, and dealing with the music biz. But, ultimately, the movie manages to paint a portrait of a man so very lonely and brilliant that your heart breaks every time he creates something. Morgen uses interviews sparingly, and mainly focuses on Love an Kurt's bandmate Krist Novoselic (who goes all the way back to the beginning of Nirvana), and the movie also serves to exonerate Love from her image as Kurt's destroyer (Kurt clearly loved her very much). The movie includes a ton of amazing music, from well-known and less-known Nirvana recordings to Kurt noodling around with the Beatles' "And I Love Her." read more...

    All Is Lost (2013)

Written and directed by J.C. Chandor, whose last movie was the brilliant and wordy Margin Call, All Is Lost is surprisingly spare, almost the polar opposite of its predecessor. It's a highly skilled and impressively unique movie, making use of only about a page of dialogue (the narration of a letter, an attempt to radio an SOS and one four-letter word), and one single actor (Robert Redford). Redford is onscreen at every moment, and he effortlessly pulls off this very physically demanding, commanding performance. read more...

      Mommy (2015)

Xavier Dolan's Mommy is a movie of little moments and big feelings. Dolan presents the movie mostly in a squarish aspect ratio, wherein his three main characters talk and interact, but occasionally, emotions become too big for the frame. In one remarkable, euphoric moment, a character literally spreads the frame open wide with his hands. read more...

        A Perfect World (1993)

Right on the heels of his critical and box-office smash Unforgiven, Clint Eastwood made this outstanding, haunting tale of an escaped convict (Kevin Costner in his greatest performance), and it was completely ignored. The convict kidnaps a little boy wearing a Casper the Friendly Ghost costume on Halloween night and spends the rest of the film trying to evade the law. The two form a strange bond during their trip, which takes place among the wide-open cornfields of the Midwest. Eastwood co-stars in an atypical role as an ineffectual lawman who drives around in a big, clunky, high-tech trailer. Laura Dern plays a criminologist who gets to verbally spar with him. read more...

          Mid90s (2018)

Two-time Oscar-nominee Jonah Hill makes his feature directing debut, and also wrote the screenplay, for Mid90s, the powerful story of a thirteen year-old Los Angeles kid who falls in — and finds a family — with a pack of skateboarders. Though Hill's touch is simple and observant, and almost documentary-like, the story's emotions run high, from joyous, as when Stevie (Sunny Suljic) first learns to stay on his board, to harrowing, as when he's pummeled by his bullying older brother (Lucas Hedges). Na-kel Smith is commanding as Ray, the most talented and responsible of the skaters, and Katherine Waterston plays the boys' bewildered mom. The great soundtrack includes incidental music by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, as well as an energizing collection of '90s hip-hop. read more...
