The Other Side of the Door (2016)

Though it borrows from Pet Sematary and other chillers, and doesn't offer much in the way of fresh scares, this effective ghostly horror movie works thanks to characters with strong emotional centers. Sarah Wayne Callies (of TV's The Walking Dead and Colony) holds everything together with the believably distraught behavior in her performance. Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982)

Halloween III: Season of the Witch is one of the purest examples of expectations defeating actuality. By that, I mean that audiences were disappointed by what they didn't see rather than what they did see; and in their disappointment, they failed to register what it was they actually saw. This happens a lot in movies, especially when it comes to sequels and remakes. With this movie, basically, the filmmakers had the idea that they didn't want to do any more Michael Myers stories, and decided to start a new series of Halloween-themed movies that told different, new stories, each year. In Fear (2014)

Horror movies about young people on their way to a party or a concert, getting lost in the woods, and being terrorized, are not uncommon. But Jeremy Lovering's In Fear strips the genre to its essentials. It begins with a boy, a girl, and a car. Not long after meeting Lucy (Alice Englert) in a bar, Tom (Iain De Caestecker) invites her to a music festival, with a surprise stopover at a hotel for a special night. The hotel is remote and hard to find, so a truck appears to lead the couple there. Unfortunately, they quickly get lost. There are signs, but they seem to lead in a circle, or a "maze," as Lucy realizes at one point. read more...

The Forest (2016)

This ghost story starts off well, with an interesting setup and interesting characters, but it begins to rely too much on cheap jump-scares, and eventually lets the mystery slip away and fall apart. Bay Area director Jason Zada clearly started with some good ideas, combining images from J-horror and American concepts, as well as a terrifying forest setting, with its hideous mixture of crawling life and creeping death. And Natalie Dormer, whose tough beauty stole scenes in The Hunger Games films and on Game of Thrones, brings unexpected depth; she creates a touching relationship with... herself (playing her own twin). read more...
